If you've ever had a hankering to try your hand at re-creating dishes from iconic movies or TV shows, Andrew Rea is way ahead of you. On his YouTube channel "Binging With Babish" (named in honor of Oliver Platt's character on "The West Wing"), the Harlem, N.Y.-based chef and videographer takes a crack at everything from the courtesan au chocolat from "Grand Budapest Hotel" and the Fitz sandwich from "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." to the wild mushroom soup in "The Soup Nazi" episode of "Seinfeld" and the prison pasta sauce in "Goodfellas." That last recipe, one of Rea's most viewed videos, debunks the notion that garlic sliced very thin with a razor blade liquefies in the pan with some olive oil. According to Rea, who tried it, it doesn't. But the rest of the scene rang true and he took the on-screen description and ran with it. "I just sort of (thought): What would a classic Italian red sauce be?" Rea explains. "What would they have done, especially in the '70s, when Italian food was kind of in a very special place? And just sort of followed those guidelines. Followed – he said three onions, two big cans of tomatoes, presumably 28 ounce cans of tomatoes and those meats and just simmer for ages. That would just be the age-old method for making red sauce." The result, Rea says, was a spectacular sauce on both screen and plate. "It was gorgeous," says Rea, who has a book coming out next month titled "Eat What You Watch: A Cookbook for Movie Lovers." "I'm a lover of Italian red sauce. And the places where I get to take creative latitude are like how I make the meatballs and things like that. So I got to make those exactly the way I would like to make them, and also the way you'd think they would be made in prison or in the '70s, just bread crumbs and eggs and a couple of dried herbs. But that ends up in a really nice meatball." Some recipes were research-intensive, such as the strudel from "Inglourious Basterds" ("I had to basically research as much as I could how strudel would have been made presumably in France during that time period," he says); others, like the courtesan au chocolat in "Budapest," came right with the DVD. And still others turned out to be not real dishes, like the milk steak with jelly beans from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which he calls "an absolute nightmare." Viewer requests often supply Rea with much of his show's fodder, though some can get quite strange and even a little gruesome, like the multiple requests for anything from "Hannibal." "I have a plan to address that and find ways to re-create that with pork," Rea says, "which apparently is the closest thing that you can get to human meat, according to some very grisly articles that I've read online. And so I will be doing that around Halloween. ... There are so many crazy requests all the time."
