I want to share with you an outstanding Amateur Radio group in Quartzsite and the surrounding area. AZARA (Arizona Amateur Radio Associa- tion) is a youth led organization that is moderated by Dave K1AN and Heather W8GEM with help from others. The group was initiated by the youth wanting to have an extracurricular program that revolves around Space Research, Radio Science and Amateur Radio. AZARA also teaches lead- ership so these youth will be able to go out into the world with skills in addition to what they've learned in school. AZARA started in Quartzsite, Blythe and Ehrenberg and now has members throughout La Paz County, as well as Blythe, Palo Verde and Ripley, California. There are 300 youth involved in AZARA and 70 of them have earned their Ham Radio License. Their enthusiasm for learning and building their projects is really conta- gious and fun to see - whether they are electronic, robotic, communication or learning to safely and properly fl y an RC drone. I recently helped be- hind the scenes with radio communications for an interactive event during the solar eclipse. Two of the AZARA members were masters of ceremonies while others handled question and answer ses- sions at area schools where remote ham stations were set up. All of the questions were directed to an expert astrophysicist, Dr. Nidhi Patel, who then gave the answers back over the air for all to hear. This network of ham radio repeaters could be heard from eastern La Paz County all the way to several miles west of Blythe, Calif. As mentioned before, AZARA is youth led but there are some very generous people that watch over, guide and direct these youth as well as help fund the program. Besides Dave and Heather, supporters include Neil W6FOG, Robyn from Az. West College, Desert Waves Amateur Radio Club, Cactus Intertie Inc. and the Industrial Develop- mental Authority of La Paz County (IDA). Funding comes from several very generous people and organizations including Ama- teur Radio Clubs, IDA, Dave K1AN, Wilma KX7LDS and others. As you can see, Ham Radio is alive and well and is multi-faceted in and of its self. It's not just for emergency, di- sasters, or communications in the event of other communication failures. It is one of the oldest forms of social media and is a lot of fun -as well as a tool to help our local youth who don't have many of the entertain- ment or recreational resources of their peers in a large metropolis area. Many of the youth of La Paz and Riverside Counties are learning new skills From the Ham Shack that schools alone can't offer. These youth are de- veloping social skills beyond their peers through Amateur Radio and the teamwork ethic that is be- ing taught. AZARA even has their own little store where not only they can purchase science projects and ham radio gear but we the public can visit. The purpose of the store is fund raising and to teach these awesome youth, social and business skills while dealing with the public. To learn more visit www.azara.org. Eddy Kilowatt, not his real name is an Extra Class Li- censed ham. He is very active in ham radio not only on the local level but is working on contacts in all 50 states and as many countries as he can. Eddy is very interested in being an "Elmer" or mentor to as many new hams as he can. He enjoys teaching others as well as promoting ham radio to the community. He is a Volunteer Examiner and lives full time in Quartzsite, Az. with his wife and two fur babies. For more info regarding Amateur Radio email him at TNT@LaPazSHARP.org
