One of the easiest salads to prepare, as well as being kid-friendly and good for you. • Prep time: 15 minutes •Yield: Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • 3-4 cups freshly grated carrots (4 to 6 medium sized carrots) • 1/2-1 cup raisins (regular, golden, Craisins or a mix) • 1 large apple, (peeled or not, your preference) cored and chopped • 1/4 to 1/3 cup mayonnaise DIRECTIONS Gently combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Composting Toilets... A better way to go? The typical RV toilet will consume 1-2 gallons of water per flush. Not only are you depleting your fresh water supply, but you're also filling up your black water tank. So, for example, if you use your toilet four times per day, that consumes up to 8 gallons of water. A 100 – gallon fresh water tank will be depleted in less than two weeks, just from flushing! At the same time, your black water tank needs dumping! Ouch! Don't worry, a better solution is at hand: the composting toilet! Composting toilets have become more popular recently among RV- ers and tiny house enthusiasts, since they require no water, and no black water tanks. The only "minus" I see is the relatively high price of the units – typically $1000 or more. Two popular models are from Na- ture's Head, and from a company called Air Head. Both are priced in the $1000 range. Each have a sepa- rate compartment (bottle) for liquid waste, that is disposed of when the bottle is full (a dump station trip). The solid waste compartment is typ- Tiny House GOULASH INGREDIENTS 1 1/2-2 lb. ground beef 1 small onion chopped 8 oz. elbow macaroni 1 large can (1 lb.) tomatoes 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, don't drain 1 small can tomato paste 1 clove garlic ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp black pepper 1 tsp chili powder DIRECTIONS Brown meat and onion, in large fry pan. Boil and drain elbow maca- roni. Add all ingredients together,, with meat and macaroni…in large pan….warm slowly. Add water if needed. Want to have moist, not dry. Add more salt and chili pow- der, to taste. Serve with hot (but- tered or garlic) bread and salad ically filled with peat moss, although some DIYers use saw dust. The com- mon question is: do they smell? If properly vented, the answer is "no." Installation is pretty straightforward, since there is no plumbing. The only "plumbing" is the installation of a vent house from the toilet to the outside. If you intend to dry camp out in the BLM for an extended period, you may want to consider a composting toilet to reduce your trips to the dump station, and save your fresh water. One note: BLM rules states that if your rig has a composting toilet, you need to be within 500 feet of one of the outhouses. This is one area where the government hasn't had time to catch up with the current technology. So, if you pull in with a Class A, B, C or towable, the assumption is that you have a standard RV toilet. Pay the fee, and you're good to go. Salome High updates Salome High School has started back up and they have hired some brand new teachers this year. Mr. Maynes said, "Mr. Lee and Mrs. Suan have some adjusting to do to this school and they are doing a great job so far." Mrs. Suan is the new math teacher, she is covering all math classes this year. Mr. Lee is the new business teacher and head of FBLA. While interviewing Mr. Lee, he said the student body is a good group of kids and he has been enjoying this year so far. Mrs. Suan was too busy teaching to get a comment, but goes to show she's hard at work in her new position. The school has definitely changed for the better. The students and staff are grateful to have a good set of teachers to start out the year. The volleyball girls are practicing hard and getting ready for games. The Lady Frogs' first match is ap- proaching fast. The first home game of the season will be against Tonopah Valley on Tuesday, August 29th. The JV games start at 4:00 p.m. and the Varsity will begin at 5:00 p.m. The next three home games will be on 9/5, 9/15 and 9/19 respectively. When asked, "What would you like to do different this year?" Coach Avila answered, "I'd like to do more challenging drills, to prepare us for the higher caliber teams that we will be playing." Coach Avila is confident about the new season, saying she's excited to be working with the re- turning group of girls and to be back in the swing of things as head coach. Football season is well underway for the Salome Frogs. There are four regular season home games this year. They're on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. at the Salome High School foot- ball field on 8/25, 9/8, 9/15, 10/6. Head Coach Bryan McCarty laid out the team's goals for this season: "Playoffs. Deep playoff run. Home playoff game." There are only two seniors on the team this year, Oscar Cruz and Jose Armenta. When asked what that meant for the team's lead- ership, Armenta answered, "There's more pressure because there are fewer people in charge." However, Coach McCarty knows they're up to the challenge. He said, "It's differ- ent because it's not just the seniors leading. All the upperclassmen have really joined in." Cruz, the quarter- back and the the team's only four year player stated, "I want all of us to have fun while winning." We're counting on a winning season here at Salome and hope to see you at the games, supporting the fighting frogs. See you out there under the Friday night lights! Meanwhile, off the field, SHS band is revving up for a new year."I think this year looks pretty promising," says Mr. Kauffman, the band direc- tor. When asked how band has been going so far this year, he responded, "My more advanced class is going really well. My other classes didn't have instruments for a few days, but I think they'll be alright. They seem pretty smart. They've been working hard, taking notes, and they've got good attitudes." Band is an excel- lent way to discover your musical talents. The school normally puts all freshmen in band. If they like it, they stay. If not they go look for pas- sions elsewhere in the school. Two new unofficial groups have popped up here at SHS: the games association and a dance squad. Mr. Tapp, the art teacher, is helping out with the games association, and student, Denisse Franco, is heading up the dance squad. These groups provide fresh, new, activities for the students here at Salome. The dance squad aims to promote school spirit and pay homage to cheer squads of the past. Their moves will hopefully put some extra pep into our sport- ing events. Meanwhile, the games association intends to attract kids that may not be interested in any of the other extracurricular activities currently offered. Mr. Tapp stated that the games association, "gives them a nice place to go hang out and do things with other students. I think it will be a positive influence in that way, give them more diversi- ty of options." Several students are interested in these new groups and look forward to these new, original, extracurricular activities.
