The Deke Newsletter 3 Chapter Approaches New Academic Year with Hopefulness, Humility I n a historic summer for Gamma Phi—after winning our lawsuit against the university and validating our cause—the brotherhood at Wesleyan remains strong for the 2017-18 school year. It is bittersweet, of course, to return to campus without the class of 2017, but they are on to accomplish bigger and better things far from the Ol' Stone House. From San Diego to New York and Boston, their careers are off to exciting starts. I wish them the best and want to remind them that their brothers will always be in Middletown to greet them. It is with optimism and humility that we meet another year at Wesleyan. Our undergraduate group is genuine, intellectual, and hungry to face challenges in whatever form they may come. We look forward to working with the university to get back into the house. This semester, we're putting together a plethora of philanthropy initiatives to put DKE back in its proper place at the forefront of social and community life. We look forward to surprising the campus and the administration with a recommitment to giving back. As I end my time as undergraduate president and pass the torch to another capable leader, I've reflected on the journey that our group has gone through over the past three years. It's incredible how it seems like yesterday that I was pledging and met my best friends through the process. It's equally as daunting how fast time flies—how one moment you're walking to your first recruitment event sweating under your blazer, and the next you're signing your first job contract and trying desperately to slow down the clock. It's been a blast, and I'm glad I've got one more year on campus with my brothers. I couldn't ask for a better group of men to spend my last year with as an undergraduate. Good luck to all on your endeavors this fall. In the Bonds, Jordan Jancze '18 (Stillwater, Minn.) Outgoing Chapter President jjancze@outlook.com The following message was sent to the Kent Literary Club by one of our younger brothers. It is humbling and encouraging to know that the effort put forth during the lawsuit did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. I just wanted to thank you guys for all the work you have put in that has gotten us here today. I think I speak for all the undergrads when I say we would be lost without this outstanding group of KLC leadership. The time you guys have devoted to our beloved fraternity has not gone unnoticed, and we sincerely thank each and every one of you for your dedication. Being the first president of the fraternity without the house two years ago was a big challenge but was made much easier with all of your support. [University President Michael] Roth managing to shorten my pledge brothers' time in the house motivated us to never let that happen again to future DKEs—not depriving them of that invaluable experience we all loved at the old stone house. I've had the pleasure of watching these past two pledge classes grow without the house, and the bonds have been just as strong, if not stronger. Little did Roth and [Vice President for Student Affairs Michael] Whaley know they were actually bringing this fraternity closer together. So, thank you all again for fighting for our cause. Your passion has motivated me to be a long-lasting KLC member to keep our beloved fraternity thriving. Thank you, guys. I am lucky to call you all brothers.
