But with Pope Benedict XVI accused of failing to pro- tect children from abusive priests, Easter Sunday also was a high-profile opportunity to play defense. ‘‘Holy Father, on your side are the people of God,’’ Cardi- nal Angelo Sodano told the pontiff, whom victims of clergy sexual abuse accuse of helping to shape and perpetuate a cli- mate of cover-up. Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, dis- missed those claims as ‘‘petty gossip.’’ The ringing tribute at the start of a Mass attended by tens of thousands in St. Peter’s Square marked an unusual departure from the Vatican’s Easter rituals, infusing the tra- dition-steeped religious cere- mony with an air of a papal pep rally. Dressed in gold robes and shielded from a cool drizzle by a canopy, Benedict looked weary during much of the Mass, the highlight of a heavy Holy Week schedule. But as he listened intently to Sodano’s paean, a smile broke across the pope’s face, and when the cardi- nal finished speaking, Benedict rose from his chair in front of the altar to embrace him. The pontiff hasn’t responded to accusations that he did too little to protect children from pedophile priests, even as sex abuse scandals threaten to over- shadow his papacy. State TV says 9 rescued in China XIANGNING, China (AP) — Nine miners were pulled to safety early Monday after spending more than a week trapped in a flooded coal mine in northern China, and state television reported more sur- vivors may be found. The nine men — among 153 trapped since March 28 — were wrapped in blankets, placed in ambulances and rushed to a hospital where teams of doctors and nurses had been standing by for several days. China Central Television said more people in the Wangjialing mine could still be alive, but did not give any details. It showed images of the min- ers being taken into the hospital in Hejin city, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the mine. Their eyes were covered to shield them from the bright lights. Some were hooked up to intravenous drips. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that their blood pressure and heart rates were normal after spending 179 hours trapped underground. It quoted one of the survivors, Li Guoyu, 38, from Henan province in central China, as saying they had gone without water because they were wor- ried about drinking the dirty water flowing in the tunnel. Suicide bombs in Baghdad kill 42 BAGHDAD (AP) — Suicide attackers detonated three car bombs in quick succession near foreign embassies in Baghdad on Sunday, killing more than 40 people in coordinated strikes that Iraqi officials said were intended to disrupt efforts to form a new government. The bombings followed the execution-style killings of 24 villagers in a Sunni area two days earlier, a spike in violence that suggests insurgents are seizing on the political uncer- tainty after the recent election to try to destabilize the country as U.S. troops prepare to leave. No clear winner emerged from the March 7 vote. Sunday’s explosions went off within minutes of each other, starting shortly after 11 a.m. One struck near the Iranian Embassy and two others hit an area that houses several diplo- matic missions, including the Egyptian Consulate and the German and Spanish embassies. It was not immedi- ately known whether diplomat- ic staff were among the victims. Authorities said they foiled two other attacks aimed at diplomatic targets by stopping the would-be bombers’ vehicles and defusing the explosives. Stunned victims in bloody clothes were loaded into ambu- lances as gray smoke rose over Baghdad. Afghan leader seeks support KABUL (AP) — Afghan President Hamid Karzai sought Sunday to rally public support for an upcoming mil- itary operation in the Tal- iban’s birthplace, promising that U.S. and NATO troops will push into insurgent areas there only after consultations with community leaders. His remarks to about 2,000 officials and tribal leaders in Kandahar reflect a NATO strategy that makes bolstering the stature and capabilities of the Afghan government in the city, the largest in southern Afghanistan, as important as clearing neighborhoods of insurgents. ‘‘There will be no military operation without your coop- eration and consultation,’’ Karzai told the leaders as the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, and NATO’s top civilian rep- resentative, Mark Sedwill, looked on. As Karzai was appealing for public support, NATO confirmed that international troops were responsible for the deaths of five people, including three women, killed Feb. 12 in Gardez south of Kabul. A NATO statement said a joint international- Afghan patrol fired on two men mistakenly believed to be insurgents. The three women were ‘‘accidentally killed as a result of the joint force firing at the men,’’ said. it U.S. and NATO forces are preparing a campaign in Kan- dahar expected to kick into high gear in June that will test President Barack Obama’s gamble that tens of thousands more troops can turn the tide in the 8-year war. Supremacists say killing means war VENTERSDORP, South Africa (AP) — Followers of one of South Africa’s most notorious white supremacists cast his death as a rallying point for their cause Sunday, with one top member claim- ing his brutal death was ‘‘a declaration of war’’ by blacks against whites. Eugene Terreblanche’s supporters blamed his slaying on a ruling party official’s performances of an apartheid-era song that advo- cates killing white farmers. Police, however, say it appeared to be a wage dispute that led two of Terreblanche’s farm workers to bludgeon him in his bed Saturday. South African officials are trying to ward off any rise in racial tensions 10 weeks before their country of about 50 million enters the global spotlight as host of soccer’s World Cup. President Jacob Zuma appealed for calm following ‘‘this terrible deed’’ and asked South Africans ‘‘not to allow agent provocateurs to take advantage of this situa- tion by inciting or fueling racial hatred.’’ Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa said Terreblanche was attacked by a 28-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy, both black. Mthetwa said they were arrested and would appear in court Tuesday on murder charges. Terreblanche, a bearded, charismatic 69-year-old, co- founded and led the Afrikan- er Weerstandsbeweging movement, better known as the AWB, which seeks an all- white republic within mostly black South Africa. Its red, white and black insignia resembles a Nazi swastika, but with three prongs instead of four.
