All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Arts & entertainment Glenn Miller Orchestra The State Theatre, 333 Oak St., in Red Bluff pre- sents Back in the Spotlight featuring the Glenn Miller Orchestra at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. After sixty years, the legendary sounds of the Glenn Miller Orchestra continue to excite the audiences worldwide. These talented musicians and singers keep Miller's music alive by performing around the world. Notable recordings include "In the Mood," "Moon- light Serenade" and "Tuxedo Junction" to name a few. A live auction at intermission and a silent auction in the lobby will be held during the event with all pro- ceeds to benefit the State Theatre. Intimate chamber concerts in Redding and Chico Gonzalo Bergara Quartet, gypsy jazz, Oct. 10 at the State Theatre. The all acoustic Gon- zalo Bergara Quartet plays a modern variant of 1930s Django Reinhardt- inspired Gypsy Jazz. Composer and lead gui- tarist Bergara mixes cas- cades of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina and is supported by an ace clarinetist and a honed rhythm section. International String The International String Trio has gained national recognition for its distinct sound and stylistic diversity. The trio's repertoire includes classical, jazz, popular and world music — Ital- ian, French, Russian, Jewish, Spanish, Latin American, Gypsy and Irish. This trio has devel- oped a unique concert program that is both high- ly entertaining and educa- tional, energetic and musically gratifying. Alexander Sevastian has won four Internation- al Accordion Competi- tions and currently plays with Quartetto Gelato. Back by popular demand, Sonos Handbell Ensemble's virtuosity mesmerizes audiences at major world events including the 1993 World Ice Skating Champi- onships and the United Nations 50th Anniversary Celebrations. Four of the leading classical musicians in the North State will perform during the North State Symphony's Eastern Europe-flavored chamber music concert, "Experience the Intimate." Performances take place Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Redding's Old City Hall, and Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. in CSU, Chico's Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall. Butte County residents Natalya Shkoda, piano, and Susie Lundberg, oboe join Humboldt County players Terrie Baune, violin and Carol Jacobson, cello in a pro- gram that North State Symphony maestro Kyle Wiley Pickett calls "stirring and serious." Shkoda, a native of the Ukraine, is Assistant Profes- sor of Piano and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at CSU, Chico. Jazz Big Band Concert REDDING — The Shasta College Division of Arts, Communications and Social Sciences presents the Shasta College Community Jazz Big Band in Concert on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 pm, in the Shasta Col- lege Theatre. The Jazz Big Band is a true large size jazz big band consisting of 22 musicians who will perform big band jazz from the 1930s through 2012. Included will be music by Count Basie and other jazz notables. Styles will include Swing, Blues, Latin Jazz, and Ballads. The concert is created for the entire family and for all ages to enjoy. German folk dancers to perform at Oktoberfest The Redding Interna- tional Couples Perform- ing Dancers will demon- strate authentic folk and German dances at the 3rd Annual Oktoberfest at St. Peter's Episcopal Church 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. The Redding folk dance group has been per- forming for more than 20 years, specializing in Ger- man dances. While Ger- man dance demonstra- tions are most in demand, the group also offers demonstrations of Scandi- navian, Israeli and Italian folk dances, as well as Waltz/Quadrille perfor- mances. To accompany the fes- tival, authentic German food including bratwurst, saurkraut, potato salad, cooked red cabbage with apples and German chocolate cake will be served.
