Watch out when Seonkyoung Longest gets bored. Indeed, when the South Korean chef and YouTube cooking host came to the States with her serviceman husband Jacob in 2009, she didn't know what to do with herself. Living in Mississippi and then Sacramento, she didn't have a car, a job or anything to stimulate her while her husband was away at work. So she got bored, stagnated and fell into depression. "After I moved to the United States after I got married to my husband, it was a super-huge culture shock," the host of such series as "Asian at Home" and "Life in Korea" explains. "I went through a lot of ... depression, and cooking helped me to work through that. And that actually made me realize who I am and what makes me happy, which is creating." So the former comic-book artist decided to give cooking a try. She sought the advice of her mother and mother-in-law on how to make certain dishes, picked up techniques by watching Food Network and Cooking Channel, and began coming up with her own recipes. In 2011, she made her first video for YouTube. Nearly six years later, her self-titled channel is approaching 500,000 subscribers, who watch her prepare everything from chicken fried rice and pad thai to a chorizo burrito and Korean pulled pork. She's been a competitor on Season 4 of "MasterChef " and was the winner of Food Network's "Restaurant Express." She even launched her own restaurant in Las Vegas in 2013. She's certainly famous among her fans, who tend to recognize her whenever she visits a big city or shops in an Asian market. And there was even one unusual encounter aboard a commercial jet. "Somebody went to the bathroom," Longest recalls with a laugh, "and walking by in the aisle she just looked back at me and said, 'I watch you on YouTube' and she just walked by. That was like random in the airplane. It was so funny." What book are you currently reading? "I listen to books a lot and right now I'm listening to 'Be Obsessed or Be Average' by Grant Cardone. I'm actually listening to this book for the fifth or sixth time now. It's my favorite." What did you have for dinner last night? "Volcano fried rice because I was recipe-testing. It's just a Korean fried rice but after you fry up the rice you make the fried rice into a mountain in the pan and then pour egg as the magma (laughs). It's like this new thing in Korea so I was recipe-testing that. I'm (hoping) to share it with everybody soon." What is your next project? "I'm actually going to be in Korea this September for a few months to film in a 'Life in Korea' series. Because 'Life in Korea: Season 1' ... was one of my (early successes) and I'm really excited to go back to Korea and film more of the shows with Jacob. Because my husband is also in Korea right now, because he's at work and I cannot wait to see him ... ." When was your last vacation, where and why? "Actually last Fourth of July, I went to L.A., but the thing is I don't really take a vacation vacation where I'm doing nothing because that's just not me.
