ALPHA XI CHAPTER | SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY Gamma Phi Beta 3 Our Plan T he Alpha Xi Chapter Affiliated House Corporation (AHC) has consulted with SMU leadership and the architects and designers of our sorority neighbors to obtain a solid base of knowledge for this proposed project. After much research and consideration rebuilding is, at present, the preferred option. We must remain competitive with other sororities on campus and continue our role as a complement to a well-rounded education. Gamma Phi Beta taught us things we could not learn in the classroom. The lessons of leadership, character, and personal responsibility are only the beginning of a very long list of traits enhanced by the Gamma Phi Beta experience. If we expect future generations of Alpha Xis at SMU to be successful, we need to provide comparable facilities and resources. The project highlights on these pages are designed to enhance the educational, personal, and professional experiences offered by membership in Gamma Phi Beta. "Joining Gamma Phi Beta proved one of the smartest things I did in college as it gave me a place to belong, friends with whom to share the joys and sorrows of developing adulthood, and true leadership experience. Alpha Xi may not be my chapter of initiation, but the women there, like all Gamma Phis, are my sisters. They have been working hard to remain competitive at SMU and I want to support them by helping ensure that their housing is safe, technologically up to date, an attractive option to future residents and sisters. I am excited by the opportunity to help them succeed so that many more generations of women can benefit from the friendships, talents, and personal development that our ever-growing sisterhood encourages." – Janny Jones Strickland, Theta '78, Housing Committee ESTIMATED PROJECT COST: $6,000,000 Challenges Inadequate space to accommodate growing chapter Dated and cramped commercial kitchen Not compliant with ADA requirements Undersized bathrooms and showers Inadequate study spaces Lacking bedrooms to house membership Minimal storage for chapter and resident use Aging plumbing and electrical systems Lack of amenities for residents and house director Increased seating capacity in chapter and dining rooms Enlarged and updated kitchen with efficient serving line Elevator and other ADA-compliant features, ideal for move-in and move-out Larger and improved bathrooms for collegians and guests Ample space throughout house for group and individual study Add 5-10 beds to house more collegians Increased storage for recruitment, ritual and archival materials and collegian use Upgraded, energy-efficient and code-compliant heating and cooling systems Additional laundry services for collegians Comfortable and convenient apartment for house director Solutions
