"The Day After" (1983) The Cold War was in its prime when ABC broadcast this superb telepic about a Soviet nuclear attack and its effect on a small Kansas town. JoBeth Williams, Jason Robards and John Lithgow are in the strong cast. "Last Night" (1998) This underrated and under-the-radar Canadian production stars Sandra Oh, Don McKellar (who also directed), Sarah Polley and Roberta Maxwell as Torontonians who celebrate and settle old business in the final hours before the anticipated apocalypse, the cause of which is never explained. "War of the Worlds" (2005) Sixty- seven years after a radio adaptation of H.G. WellsÊ sci-fi tale of a Martian invasion of Earth caused a minor panic across the United States, Steven Spielberg gave it big-budget theatrical treatment, with Tom Cruise in the role of a New Jersey family man fighting for survival with his two young children as alien tripods vaporize everything in their path.
