With the Independence Day holiday upcoming this week, maybe you're planning an elaborate dinner party for friends or just a cookout for the family. Or perhaps you're just looking for a break from the same-old same-old for dinner one night. In any case, those at a loss as to what to make for dinner can turn on their laptop or tablet, pull up YouTube and search for ideas. From the unusual and the exotic to the domestic and the international, you can rest assured you will find something to strike your fancy in any one of the video site's myriad channels, some of which are listed here. "Donal Skehan": Dublin-born chef and Food Network personality Skehan is your host for a rather eclectic mix of how-to videos in which he offers up recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and even healthful fare. Saltimbocca alla Romana, chocolate polenta cake, creamy white wine chicken and something he calls "the ultimate fried egg sandwich" are among his more recent productions. Yum! "The Alison Show": Boasting the tagline "It's pretty much a party," Utah event producer Alison Faulkner's channel has all aspects of party planning covered, from the menu and decorations to entertainment and attire, and for any occasion. She's also an inveterate crafter and a major proponent of finding out what you're good at in life and making it your career – as she clearly has. "Bon Appetit": Not to be confused with Bon Appetit magazine, this channel boasts a wealth of food knowledge, from recipes, kitchen tips and how-to videos to food documentaries, shorts and even restaurant guides. And if you're so inclined, you can even learn how to butcher an entire cow step by step, as detailed in one recent upload. Very useful. "Epicurious": The expert, the novice and everyone in between will find something to pique their curiosity in this channel from Condé Nast that posts how-tos on topics such as grilling pizza, making soft scrambled eggs, creating a broth in 30 minutes in a pressure cooker and building a hero sandwich. "Tastemade": Home cooks, Michelin- starred chefs and veteran travelers are among the contributors to this quirky channel that features food and travel stories from around the world, along with recipes, original series and cooking tutorials. Launched in 2012, it averages a new video nearly every day, some of which will make you laugh but all will make you learn. "You Suck at Cooking": Keeping with the laugh-and-learn theme is this channel aimed at the less skilled among us when it comes to chops in the kitchen, whose videos cover subjects such as shucking corn, chopping onions and making popcorn. There are also more adventurous tutorials on making tomato sauce, potato salad and brownies – all with an off-kilter sensibility and sense of humor. Donal Skehan BY GEORGE DICKIE Need a dinner idea?
