Money & Pet Insurance Do you have room in your budget for a new pet? Food, grooming and veterinary expenses add up, and some pets are more expensive than others. Will you want pet insurance? Insurance can cover checkups and preventive care for your pet and is available from well- respected organizations such as the ASPCA®. Maturity & Family Is your child's personality and age suited to pet ownership? Is the whole family on board with the idea? Pets are best for children age 5 and older who demonstrate a consistent, genuine interest in having a pet. Even if a new pet "belongs" to your child, all family members will likely be affected and pitch in with pet care. Breeds & Personalities What type of pet best suits your child and family? Dogs' and cats' needs and personalities vary widely by breed, age and background. If you're unsure of your child's commitment, consider a smaller pet such as a fish or hamster. Welcoming a new pet into your home is a big deal. Discuss all aspects carefully with your child and the rest of your family members.
