Harbor no pity for Katie Lee. As host of "Beach Bites with Katie Lee," currently in its second season Thursdays on Cooking Channel, she is tasked with traveling to tropical locales such as Florida, Hawaii, Alabama and South Carolina, sit at beachfront restaurants and sample the best dishes they have to offer – and do it during the dead of winter. And get paid for it. Not bad work if you can get it. "Oh yeah," agrees Lee with a hearty laugh. "Yeah, we were in the South the whole time. One of the greatest perks is that we film in February and March, so I get to leave New York City when it's freezing and go to all these amazing beach locations. My friends are very jealous." This season takes Lee to places she's never been to try the local cuisine, ranging from a whole pig roasted in the ground on a beach in Maui (which she says is as good as it sounds) and a trout that she caught herself and then grilled in Lake Havasu, Ariz., to mai tais and beef empanadas in Clearwater, Fla., and a chicken-fried steak made from wagyu beef in Alabama. And then there was also the familiar, one of which was a stop at a vacation spot that evokes happy memories for her. "It was really special for me to get to go back to Myrtle Beach, S.C.," she says. "That's where we always went when I was a kid and I hadn't been there in almost 20 years, so I really enjoyed getting to go see all of my favorite spots from childhood. And we filmed at a restaurant called the Sea Captain's House, which was my grandfather's favorite restaurant, and I had fried oysters, which were his favorite. So it felt like a real way to reconnect to my family. My grandfather is no longer with us, so it was a really special moment for me, very full circle." What book are you currently reading? "I just started 'The Woman in Cabin 10.' It's a thriller. I'm about 40 pages into it and I've decided I can't read it at night (laughs). It's scary but I like it." What did you have for dinner last night? "Well, last night I was at the Met Ball (the fund-raising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York) and it was sea bass, kale and some roasted vegetables." What is your next project? "That's a good question. 'The Kitchen' is still going strong on Food Network and that really keeps me busy. We're in production every month so I'm constantly writing recipes for the show. I'd like to eventually do another book but I'm not really sure what it's going to be yet." When was your last vacation, where and why? "It's hard not to think of my show as a vacation but I guess that's technically work. So my last real vacation was in January. I went to the Florida Keys to Little Palm Island."
