For some people, "family" is considered a four-letter word. For Fox and Gordon Ramsay, it's the central theme of a new live cooking competition series debuting this week. In "The F Word With Gordon Ramsay," premiering Wednesday, May 31, the award-winning chef, restaurateur and TV presenter is the host as teams of foodie families, friends and co-workers duke it out in a pressurized, high-stakes cook- off, with their creations served to and judged by a dining room full of diners, celebrities and VIP guests. Along the way, Ramsay chats with the guests, gives cooking demonstrations and presents field segments. The winning "family" in each episode then gets a chance to compete for a cash prize in the season finale. "We call them family," the personable Ramsay explains, "because you spend more time with them at work than you do with your own family ... . So for me, it was all about taking that live experience and giving America the insight into what it's like live, coming into a restaurant. It's theater ... and there's lots of exciting things going on, from the most amazing families battling it out in the kitchen to going head-to-head cooking for the entire dining room to competitive best friends going up against others and lots of exciting stuff." None of the contestants have professional experience, nor had they prepared meals for a group a large as the 250 or so diners here. But all have a passion and talent for food prep, which Ramsay hoped to mentor to their fullest potential. "We're putting the onus on the customers: 'Would you pay for that?' " he says. "If they'd pay for it, then it's a vote (yes). If they wouldn't pay for it, then I haven't done my job properly, which makes me look bad and them bad. So it's transforming that passion from the household into the restaurant environment for one night only and gearing up the sort of stakes to sort of drop them into the deep water for 60 minutes." Gordon Ramsay What book are you currently reading? "I watched the movie 'The Girl on the Train' and I watched it on the plane, and my wife said to me, 'Why are you watching something so depressing as that? The book's way better.' So I just started reading the book 'The Girl on the Train' literally two days ago." What did you have for dinner last night? "Last night, I went to the Soho House in Malibu and I had the most amazing piece of grilled halibut that sat on a citrus and fennel salad. ... Halibut is difficult to cook, let alone grill, but it was grilled and basted at the same time so it was basically with a citrus vinaigrette. As it cooled down, they just tenderized this incredible halibut." What is your next project? "My next project is to go live on 'The F Word.' " When was your last vacation, where and why? "That was two weeks ago when we were due to go skiing in Courchevel (in the French Alps) and all the family and myself, my wife and four children, were due to go. Now unfortunately I tore my Achilles last year so I had surgery, so there was no way I could go skiing. So we went to Cornwall in South England for a week instead and went out in a boat and fished and then had the most amazing time with the kids."
