2B Daily News – Friday, September 14, 2012 UConn's Calhoun retires STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Jim Calhoun retired as Connecticut's basketball coach Thursday, closing a 26-year career at the school with thanks to everyone who helped him turn UConn from an ath- letic backwater into a national power that won three national titles. The retirement of the director Warde Manuel. When he is fully retired, Calhoun will become head coach emeritus. Calhoun has been slowed by health prob- lems in recent years, including a fractured hip last month. ''The hip injury really 70-year-old Hall of Famer was announced on the court in Storrs, where Cal- houn racked up many of his 873 total wins. In thanking administra- tors, players, fans and his family, Calhoun said he feels blessed and is grate- ful that ''you trusted us.'' Calhoun will take a transition appointment through next spring as a special assistant to athletic didn't enter into the deci- sion, except that it gave me more time to think about it and the more I thought about it, the more I became convinced that this was the right time to move on to the next phase of my life,'' he said in an official statement. Assistant coach Kevin Ollie, who played point guard for Calhoun from 1991-95, will be the Huskies' new coach. His contract runs through next April 4 and he will be paid $625,000. He takes over a team that returns only five play- ers who saw significant playing time a year ago and failed to qualify acad- emically for the 2013 NCAA tournament. UConn's ban from the postseason culminated a series of problems the pro- gram has had with the NCAA in recent years. ''I am very honored and humbled to become the UConn men's basket- ball coach,'' said Ollie. ''I cannot put into words how grateful I am to coach Jim Calhoun, who retires today as one of the most legendary coaches in the history of college basket- ball. Coach Calhoun brought me here to Con- necticut as a person right out of high school and has mentored me into the per- son I have become today.'' Despite the school's problems and uncertain future, Calhoun — who coached UConn's latest title winners just last year — got a fine send off. Raiders cornerback Lee to start against Miami nerback Pat Lee is no stranger to com- ing off the bench in emergency situa- tions. ALAMEDA (AP) — Oakland cor- He did it in the Super Bowl two years ago while with Green Bay, help- ing the Packers secondary hold on after injuries put Charles Woodson and Sam Shields on the sidelines. Now he's being asked to do the same for the Raiders — albeit on a sig- nificantly smaller stage. This time Lee will be playing the entire game, no matter what package the Raiders are in. Not that it should make a difference, according to Shawntae Spencer, Oak- land's other starting cornerback. ''Whether you start the game or Starter Ron Bartell is out indefinite- ly after suffering a fractured scapula in Oakland's season-opening loss to San Diego, leaving Lee to take over for the Raiders' Week 2 game in Miami. ''That's what backup guys prepare you're in the game, you're in the game,'' Spencer said. ''It's all game- time experience to me. You saw that Monday night. He came in, he was real comfortable and he played very, very well. It's not one of those things where we have to get in his ear. He's been around.'' for,'' Lee said Thursday. ''I've been playing all my life and it's not a big deal to go in when somebody else goes down because that's what we do. That's why we're here.'' The fifth-year veteran has made just one other start in his career but that was as a nickel back. He came off the field shortly after the first series and returned only when the Packers needed extra defensive backs. ''In the history of the NFL, the strongest corre- lation to winning and los- ing is the turnover ratio,'' Smith said. ''The turnover battle is the No. 1.'' The 49ers know all about it. They finished 13- 3 last season and made their first trip to the play- offs since 2002 after lead- ing the NFL with a plus- 28 turnover differential, one of the league's best since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Bartell, signed as a free agent to be the Raiders' top cornerback after the team cut high-priced starters Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson, was injured while making a tackle on San Diego wide receiver Malcolm Floyd. He stayed in the game for one play before heading to the locker room to get checked out. Wednesday that Bartell had sustained a fractured scapula, though it doesn't appear surgery will be necessary. No timetable has been set for Raiders coach Dennis Allen said esting down the stretch.'' Smith has been most completed 20 of 26 passes without an interception during last week's 30-22 victory at Green Bay, breaking Hall of Famer Steve Young's previous team record of 184 con- secutive passes without a pick. He The previous seven sea- sons, all of which they fin- ished without a winning record, San Francisco committed 221 turnovers and had a cumulative turnover differential of minus-57. The 49ers changed that dramatically once Jim Harbaugh and a new coaching staff took over the team last year. San Francisco matched the NFL record for fewest turnovers in a season, also held by the 2010 Patriots. ''Ball security relates to your team being success- ful, and we're very serious about that,'' Harbaugh said. ''commitment to taking care of the ball,'' Har- baugh said, and Smith was transformed by that approach last season. In his first six NFL sea- sons, Smith threw 53 interceptions and lost 16 fumbles while throwing 51 touchdown passes. He threw 17 touchdown pass- es last season, when Smith set a team record for The 49ers make a co's two playoff games last season, Smith has now thrown 253 consecutive passes without an inter- ception. ''That's huge, and it's a credit to Alex,'' offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. ''He's got an innate feel for risk management on the fly. A lot of that goes unseen, but it's all calculated by him. He's done an incredible job.'' Smith isn't the only one. Three-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore, who had two lost fumbles among his 299 touches last season, enters Sun- day's game with a career- best string of 226 touches (220 rushes, six recep- tions) without a lost fum- ble. Including San Francis- Hunter, has never fumbled in his 17 career games. Gore and Hunter com- bined for 153 yards rush- ing on 25 carries last week against the Packers. Harbaugh credits run- ning backs coach Tom Rathman, who played full- back for the 49ers from 1986-1993, with ''doing as good a job as any of us have ever seen done,'' in preparing his unit to pro- tect the football. ''There's no secret to it. Gore's backup, Kendall Bartell's return. In the meantime, Lee will get all the work at left cornerback. Spencer noted Lee's size and said the 28-year-old defensive back brings a little more physical presence to the Raiders secondary. ''He's a big corner, man,'' Spencer said. ''He's 205, somewhere in there, and tackles well. I know the staff is very comfortable with him being in there, playing all the calls. I know they've got total confidence in him.''
