THE BEARCAT SIG Zeta Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi at The University of Cincinnati V Summer 2017 ZETA PSI GOING STRONG Plans Underway to Shape Next Decade of Brothers W e hope you enjoyed the first Bearcat Sig newsletter and that you feel more connected to the Zeta Psi Chapter. We have been encouraged by all the brothers who have written, emailed, and called us with updates about their lives. It is always great when alumni reconnect and share their stories. ACTIVE CHAPTER TRIUMPHS The active chapter continues to be strong and nurture leadership. They raised over $20,000 for cancer research at Derby Days and earned a cumulative 3.307 grade point average. There is a reason we are the longest-running, continuous fraternity at the University of Cincinnati, and it's because of the support of our alumni like you. HOUSE CORPORATION MEETING At the winter House Corporation meeting, we discussed leadership programming and house improvement projects. The active chapter established a new weekend leadership retreat to work on chapter growth and personal development. We were so pleased with their ambitious initiative that we voted to reimburse them for half of the cost of the retreat and we hope to continue to contribute in the future. ZETA PSI HOUSE IMPROVEMENT Two house improvement projects were approved at the winter meeting. The first is the renovation of the common area restroom, which will include a new women's restroom. The second project will improve areas of the library to better accommodate group projects and quiet, individual study space. We look forward to showcasing these projects during Homecoming this fall. NEW ANNUAL FUND To support our leadership training and house capital projects, we've established a Zeta Psi House Fund with a goal of raising $20,000 per year. At the time of this writing, we have raised more than $8,000. We encourage you to make your gift to Sigma Chi Zeta Psi today. Visit donate.zetapsisigs.com or send a check to Lincoln W. Pavey Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 42605, Blue Ash, OH 45242. Checks can be made payable to the Sigma Chi Building Co. for house capital projects (preferred and non-tax deductible) or to the LWPEF for leadership programs (tax deductible). In Hoc Signo Vinces, Sean M. Lee '09 House Corporation Alumni Relations Chair, President-Elect alumni@zetapsisigs.com An Executive Influence How Zeta Psi Shaped Gregory Wolf '92 into a Leader G reek organizations are often phenomenal resources for extending one's social network, and Gregory Wolf '92 knew he wanted to join a brotherhood upon starting school at the University of Cincinnati for this reason. He was incredibly close to becoming a member of another fraternity when his brother, Andrew Wolf '91, and Sigma Chi members Timothy Oxender '91 and Scott W. Satterthwaite '90 encouraged him to consider Zeta Psi Chapter. "Those guys made all the difference in my decision to join Sigma Chi," Greg recalled. "It was the genuine brotherhood that ultimately drew me in." Greg's active years in the chapter were full of opportuni- ties and benefitted him well beyond the social incentives. The members worked hard together, improving Zeta Psi's academic standing on campus and strengthening ties with the House Corporation and local alumni group in the process. The chapter became a major organization at UC and was a recipient of the Peterson Significant Chapter award. Some of Greg's most formative experiences resulted from serving in executive roles, including pro consul and consul. He credits Link Pavey '48, Steve Strickland '54, Bill Johnson '58, Jay DeWitt '59, and other leaders who came before him for setting a precedent by which he could shape his own leadership approach. Their examples taught Greg how to successfully manage others within the chapter and elsewhere on campus. Elliott Hilsinger '69, P. William "Bill" Smart '52, and Eric Hansen '89 were more actively involved alumni who instilled in Greg the importance of upholding commitments and values. "While there were challenges providing governance to more than 100 fellow students, the good times with members and our successes as a chapter are what I remember most," Greg shared. He found it rewarding to see brothers from later membership classes carry on Zeta Psi's momentum, including Daniel Harty '93, Alec (Continued on page 2)
