By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor A day after defensive miscues cost them a league game in Foothill, the Red Bluff Spartans bounced back, Wednesday, with a 5-1 win over Marist, Ore. in their first of a four-game homestand. Storm Lewis scattered seven hits and struck out seven batters on his way to a complete game victo- ry. Lewis said his offspeed pitches were working for him all day and that helped his confidence on the mound. After allowing a run to the visit- ing Oregon school in the top of the first, Red Bluff struck back for three of their own in their half. Derek Jones, a late-game deci- sion after being injured in Tuesday night’s loss to Foothill, started Red Bluff off with a double. EJ Stanton walked and two bat- ters later Scott Avery drove in Jones with an RBI groundout. Stanton came home on a wild pitch and Jordan Fox completed his at bat with a hard hit ball the Marist third baseman could only smother. Then Maison Etzler drilled a ball back to the pitcher that once again the Marist defense couldn’t handle to put runners on the cor- ners. During the next at bat Etzler took off to steal second base and the Marist catcher elected to try to pick Fox off at third, but his throw went into left field to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. Red Bluff tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. After loading the bases, Trevor Miller laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt down the first base line as Etzler came charging home to score. “It makes the game exciting to know the coach does have confi- dence in you,” Miller said of the play. Jones drove in the final Spartan run on a fielder’s choice ground ball the next at bat. The Spartans collected six hits on the day, but fell to victim to three double plays, including a rare interference call. Lewis pitched a steady game for the Spartans, not issuing a walk and relying on his defense. Up next for the Spartans is sec- tion favorite Pleasant Valley, who handed the Spartans their only shutout loss 3-0 on March 13 at the Oroville Tournament. “We’re really excited,” Lewis said of Friday’s 1 p.m. game against the Vikings. Lewis said recent media opin- ions that the Vikings can only lose if they beat themselves, has the Spartans fired up for the Eastern Athletic League showdown. Red Bluff fell 5-1 at Foothill on Tuesday with Stanton having the lone RBI and allowing just one earned run in five innings on the mound. The Spartans are 10-3 on the season. “It’s always nice coming out and beating a good team like that after a disappointing loss,” Miller said of Wednesday’s win over Marist.
