GAMMA PHI BETA 3 GAMMA PHI BETA EARNS THIRD-BEST GREEK GPA ON CAMPUS Women Welcome Five New Members T he spring semester is one of my favorites as a member of Gamma Phi Beta at Sigma! Between our Crescent Ball formal and Senior Week, this semester provides many outlets for our women to come together in the name of Gamma Phi Beta. ACADEMICS REMAIN A PRIORITY Upon returning for this semester, we were pleased to learn that we had earned a 3.41 GPA for the fall 2016 semester. Not only did this keep us as third on the Hill within the all-sorority rankings, this GPA also earned us third-best GPA of the 45 Greek organizations on campus! CHAPTER HOSTS MOONBALL TOURNAMENT As one of the few chapters selected to pilot Gamma Phi Beta's new Moonball philanthropy last spring, we were given the opportunity to host a kickball tournament benefitting Girls on the Run. Raising over $1,000, our new philanthropy event holds promise and we look forward to hosting the second annual Moonball Tournament on April 23 at Holcomb Sports Complex. SIGMA SISTERHOOD GROWS At the beginning of this semester, Sigma Chapter was pleased to welcome five outstanding new members into our 2016-17 freshman pledge class. The chapter had a few open spots due to seniors graduating early in December. Membership Vice President Audrey DeVries '14 said, "I love recruitment because it allows our chapter and sisterhood to grow. It's so awesome watching great women find their homes within the Greek community. I couldn't be happier and more excited for the five new members we gained through spring recruitment this year!" REAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE HELD IN CHICAGO In late January, our executive council attended Gamma Phi Beta's REAL (Responsible Ethical Authentic Lifelong) Leadership Conference held in Chicago, Illinois. We learned many new strategies to enhance the leadership skills of our executive team and chapter. We hope to share the knowledge we gained to strengthen our chapter, and finish this semester strong! S ince 1970, the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity has honored a select group of women to be inducted into the University of Kansas Women's Hall of Fame. It honors and cele- brates KU's rich legacy of phenomenal women. This year they will induct one of Sigma's own, Saralyn Reece Hardy '71. Saralyn is the first Marilyn Stokstad Director of the Spencer Museum of Art. Recognized as a national leader in her field, she served as director of the Salina Art Center and director of Museums and Visual Arts for the National Endowment for the Arts and has been involved at the national, regional and local levels in shap- ing the way in which art is presented, supported and dissemi- nated, seeking new voices and perspectives. Among her many accomplishments, she has led a large-scale renovation of the Spencer. Hardy received her bachelor's and master's degrees from KU. Of her Gamma Phi Beta experience and Hall of Fame induction, Saralyn says, "It was such an honor to be inducted. I thought about my years as a learner at KU and how I formed wonderful friend- ships at GFB. Those supportive friendships were a boost to my career and personal life. Gamma Phi remained a lifelong interest of my mother, Marynell Dyatt Reece '41, who was my most impor- tant role model." Congratulations, Saralyn!
