"The women I found at GPhi were extremely kind and welcoming," she says. "They shared my goals and I could see it was a place where I would fit." What Lauren saw during recruitment only became stronger as time went on and Sigma Chapter framed her time as an undergraduate. "I can't imagine having gone through four years of college without Gamma Phi Beta. It was my total college experience and I made such great connections— those friendships are the ones that are still strongest for me today." Now, several years out of school, many of those friends have made their homes in Kansas City. The group gets together every Monday to watch The Bachelor and meets regularly for dinners and trips. "I think the women from that time in one's life just get a different piece of you that other people don't know. You do so much growing and maturing in those four years and they love you then and still love you now." Professionally, Lauren has excelled in her chosen career post-college. Currently in her third year of teaching first grade in the Olathe School District, Lauren has already planted deep roots in her school and community. In 2016, she was one of 32 recipients of the Kansas Horizon Award, which the Kansas State Department of Education presents to recognize the exemplary work of teachers during their first year in the classroom. "I'm from a long line of teachers and my whole life I've known that this is what I wanted to do. I've loved con- necting with students, seeing the lightbulb go off for them, and being a part of their story. My time in Gamma Phi absolutely helped prepare me for this part of life. In the house, there are all different sorts of people and the expe- rience of living and working with them showed me how to find value in all personalities and all different types of people. It taught me how to make connections and become invested in other people's lives." Beyond the school day, Lauren keeps busy coaching Girls on the Run, a running club at school and also Gamma Phi's philanthropy. She exercises on her own with cycling classes and produces a monthly spread for KC Lifestyle Magazine. She and her husband, Zack, were married last June and live in Prairie Village. She can be reached at lekorte@olatheschools.org.
