8B Daily News – Wednesday, September 5, 2012 First lady gets first-night convention spotlight CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — In a tight race for the White House, President Barack Obama exhorted college stu- dents not to forget him despite difficult times as Democrats shone the spotlight on his wife at the opening of their national convention. Republicans weren't alone in pointing out the economic troubles in an election year shadowed by a sluggish recovery and unemployment of 8.3 percent. ''It's tough out there'' for many Americans, conceded Elizabeth Warren, run- ning for a Senate seat now in Republican hands in Massachusetts. Obama, campaigning at Norfolk State Univer- sity, said things will only get worse if Republican Mitt Rom- ney wins the White House this fall, and told his college-age audience that Election Day apa- thy was his enemy — and theirs. ''counting on you, maybe not to vote for Romney, but they're counting on you to feel discouraged,'' he said. ''And they figure if you don't vote, then big oil will write our energy future, and insurance companies will write our health care plans, and politicians will dic- tate what a woman can or can't do when it comes to her own health.'' ''They're counting on you just to accept their version of things,'' he said. Republicans are WORLD BRIEFING what he called ''sensi- tive and classified'' information. He was not more specific but said the author was required to submit the book to the Pentagon before publication for a formal review of potential dis- closures of such infor- mation. More than 100,000 Syrians fled country in Clinton's convention speech for a step toward reconciliation CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — When Bill Clinton takes the convention stage in prime time Wednesday to praise President Barack Obama, it will be the most visible step on a path toward reconciliation for two former rivals whose political fortunes are now inextricably linked. That Obama would choose the former presi- dent for such a high-profile speaking spot and that Clinton would accept seemed unfathomable in 2008, when the two clashed bitterly during the Democratic nomination showdown between Obama and Hillary Rod- ham Clinton, the former president's wife. Even though Hillary Clinton now serves as Obama's secre- tary of state, resentments between the current and former presidents have been slow to ebb. But now, with the Democratic incumbent locked in a tight race with Republican Mitt Romney, Obama has fully embraced Clinton as a political part- ner in hopes of capturing the former president's uncanny knack for political survival against tough odds. ''President Clinton has an economic record second to none,'' Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said at a briefing Tuesday host- ed by ABC News and Yahoo. ''He's a very credi- ble messenger ... he's going to deliver a very com- pelling speech.'' Obama called Clinton in July and asked him to give the speech that would place the president's name in nomination. Clinton accepted enthusiastically, aides to both men said. Pentagon says book on bin Laden raid contains classified data WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Navy SEAL's insider account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden con- tains classified informa- tion, the Pentagon said Tuesday, and the admi- ral who heads the Naval Special Warfare Com- mand said details in the book may provide ene- mies with dangerous insight into secretive U.S. operations. Pybus told his force Tuesday that ''hawking details about a mission'' and selling other infor- mation about SEAL training and operations puts the force and their families at risk. ''For an elite force that should be humble and disciplined for life, we are certainly not appearing to be so,'' Pybus wrote in a letter to the roughly 8,000 troops under his com- mand. ''We owe our chain of command much better than this.'' The letter was obtained by The Associ- ated Press. Rear Adm. Sean August BEIRUT (AP) — More than 100,000 Syr- ians fled their country in August, the highest monthly total since the crisis began in March 2011, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday. That exodus sharply increased the number of Syrians now living in neighboring countries, bringing the total num- ber of refugees to 234,368 in the past 17 months, the agency said. Along with activists' reports that the death toll in August was also the highest in the civil war with 5,000 killed, all signs are pointing to unprecedented levels of misery in a country where President Bashar Assad's regime is fight- ing an increasingly vio- lent rebellion. ''If you do the math, At the Pentagon, press secretary George Little said that an offi- cial review of the book, ''No Easy Day,'' deter- mined that it reveals significant escalation in refugee movement and people seeking asylum, and probably points to a very precarious and vio- lent situation inside the country,'' she said. it's quite an astonishing number,'' U.N. refugee agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said of the number of people who fled in August, speaking to reporters Tuesday in Geneva. ''And it points to a Romney campaign, RNC raise $100 million WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney's presi- dential campaign has raised at least $100 mil- lion in August, The Asso- ciated Press has learned, hitting that mark for a third consecutive month with a fundraising prowess that has let him outraise President Barack Obama so far this sum- mer. The early numbers, which include money raised by the national Republican Party, will be publicly released next week. They were described by two people familiar with the figures who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share internal campaign matters. revealed on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., where delegates will nominate Obama for a second term. Federal records show that Romney and the GOP have pulled in more cash than Obama's re-election effort in May, June and July, including money collected by the Democratic Party. It is usually difficult for a challenger to raise more money than an incumbent holding a major elective office, particularly in a presidential race. The figures exclude tens of millions of dollars that outside ''super'' political action commit- tees are pouring into the race to help Romney. Those groups have been largely bankrolled by wealthy Americans, thanks to changes in recent years that have loosened campaign- finance regulations.
