Harold "Bud" Burke '50 Shares a Lifetime of Memories H arold "Bud" Burke '50 first became associated with the Beta-Chi Chapter of Kappa Sigma as a recent high school graduate. During a trip to campus soon after graduation, he noticed the class of 1949 moving out of the house for summer break. Being a Boy Scout, helping others in need is in Bud's blood, so he pitched in. Later that fall, he returned to campus, this time as a student. His next trip to the Beta-Chi house found active members moving in, so true to form, Bud jumped in to assist. His visits and helping hand made an impression on the Chapter and they invited him to join. The following summer, Bud took some classes at MU. During his stay, he took up residence with the Beta-Gamma Chapter. He later decided to stay at Mizzou for school after the summer semester to complete his education. At the same time, the Korean War had begun. Bud was a student of ROTC, and learned that he could complete his final two years of school and graduate with a two-year commission of active duty and six years in the reserve. He accepted and was sent to Germany where he served as a finance officer for two years. Upon his return to the States, he decided to go back to school, this time to Rolla studying mechanical engineering. After graduation, he went to work for Boeing before returning to the military and the Vietnam War. To say Bud has had a lot of life experience is an understatement. His advice for undergraduates is simple: "Graduate! Without that ticket, you're not getting on the bus. Also, as an alumnus, make sure you attend any event you can. You will maintain your relationships and always have a good time." Bud's Kappa Sigma days are special because he shares membership with two chapters. His friendships span many years of brotherhood and camaraderie. "I grew so much in Kappa Sigma, literally—my freshman year I grew five to six inches! But aside from that, I gained many friends and learned the positives of Fraternity life. There were always people around when you needed help, and as an Eagle Scout, that was already my way of thinking." During Harold's time at Mizzou he was a cheerleader and an avid supporter of the sports teams. Later in life, Harold continued his cheerleading at Mizzou football games and was known by the fans as "Spider." Spider had the ability to get the crowds going. During the Beta-Chi 100 year celebration, while watching a Cardinals playoff game, we all got to witness Spider in action inspiring everyone in the room to cheer the Cardinals on. Bud and his wife, Libby, live in Republic, Missouri. They have three children: Teresa, Katie, and David, two cheerleaders and one All- American. Bud obtained three degrees, a B.A. in economics, a B.S. in mechanical engineering, and a master's degree in civil engineering, provided by the U.S. military. Bud enjoys genealogy, or as he prefers to call it, family history. "It's fun to learn the depth of what these people did."
