"__ Things I Hate About You" Solution on page 2 CoverStory By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it For anyone who still may doubt "Fargo" is the stuff of a television series, get ready for your skepti- cism to be quashed a third time. The characters change but the quirks remain as the FX drama inspired by the Oscar-winning 1996 Coen-brothers movie be- gins its 2010-set Season 3 on Wednesday, April 19. Continuing the show's pat- tern of attracting major film stars, the rebooted saga now casts Ewan McGregor in the dual roles of dissim- ilar brothers, successful Minnesota realtor Emmit and embittered parole offi- cer Ray. Prompted by a parolee with whom he's romantical- ly involved (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, after her recent runs on "Brain- Dead" and "Mercy Street"), Ray tries to turn things around for himself through criminal means, resulting in an unintended murder. Police chief, mom and new divorcee Gloria (Carrie Coon, "The Leftovers") leads the probe, while Emmit resists a stranger's (David Thewlis) efforts to cut himself and his bosses in on Emmit's business. Known for movies from "Trainspotting" and "Moulin Rouge!" to the "Star Wars" prequels and the current "Beauty and the Beast" (in which he voices Lumiere), McGregor allows that he hadn't seen either of "Fargo's" earlier seasons — the first of which teamed Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman and made a star of Allison Tolman (soon to be seen in ABC's "Downward Dog"), and the second of which featured Kirsten Dunst and Patrick Wilson — when he re- ceived an unofficial offer to headline the third round. "I met one of the pro- ducers when I was skiing in Utah," McGregor recalls, "and I was chatting with him and he said, 'Have you seen "Fargo"?' And I hadn't, and he said they were looking for an actor to play two brothers in Sea- son 3. So I got home and I started watching Episode 1 of Season 1, and I watched to the end of Season 2 almost in a week, I think. I was pretty grabbed by it, obsessed by it, and here we are." If the Carrie Coon char- acter echoes the role that brought Frances McDor- mand an Academy Award for the original "Fargo" movie, executive producer (and former NBC program- mer) Warren Littlefield says that's part of the design by series showrunner Noah Hawley. "He channeled (Joel and Ethan Coen) and continues to do so," Little- field maintains. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars in Season 3 of "Fargo," starting Wednesday on FX. FX's 'Fargo' reboots with new characters but same offbeat tone WE CARRY LAWN MOWERS 711 E. WATERFORD • WAKARUSA • 574.862.1163 SALES • SERVICE • RENTALS ® MOWERS ®
