The public is invited to hear Southern Gospel at its finest with Liberty Quartet at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 21 at the First Church of God, 1005 S. Jackson St. A people's favorite in this gospel field. Liberty not only is energetic and humorous, but most importantly have heart to lead their listen- ers into an intimate wor- ship experience. Their mu- sic appeals to all ages and this will be a night of inspi- rational great gospel music. A love offering will be taken at the concert. SOUTHERNGOSPEL LibertyQuartetsettoperformconcert When asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus answered, "'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.' This is the first and great- est commandment. And the second is like it. 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' On these two com- mandments hang all the Law, and the Prophets" (Mt 22:37-39). We sometimes pridefully think we love God and do reasonably well on the sec- ond commandment, too. But if we heard our words and saw our actions as oth- ers experienced them, we may be surprised at what we discover. I recently went shopping with a friend. We laugh of- ten because she has a good sense of humor. But as we walked by a picture of for- mer President Obama and his wife Michelle, my friend flicked the picture with her fingers. I stopped and asked why she did this. She said she did not like them much. In my friend's opinion "they ru- ined our country." On my Facebook page there was a heated dis- cussion about our cur- rent President Donald Trump. Two believers were each speaking vehemently from opposing sides. Sev- eral third parties joined in the fray, one of them stating to a person that agreed with her opinion, "Don't listen to those who have nasty comments. You might as well try to talk to a brick wall. They have their minds made up." If you asked each per- son in the debate if they loved God, I am confident the answer would be ve- hemently "yes, with all my heart, soul and mind." But do their words show love and respect for their neigh- bor-politicians? What is the harm in harsh criticisms of poli- ticians or their support- ers whom we don't like? Chances are great that we will never meet them and if we do, they will not be coming to our home to share a meal. So why con- sider them our neighbors? Jesus told a story about politicians. We call the story 'The Good Samar- itan.' The political de- bate of Jesus' time was not about Muslims but about whether Samaritans had any value. His parable in- volved the leaders (poli- ticians) of Israel, a priest, and a Levite (Lk 10:25-37). Jesus asked who was the good neighbor. If you are familiar with the story, you know it was the Samaritan because he had compas- sion on the man who had been robbed. None of the men knew the victim yet Jesus said, in essence, that they were each his neighbor. Notice Jesus did not say how bad the politicians' behavior was. He simply pointed out the good behavior of the Samaritan and allowed the story to make the point. Jesus said, "I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in Heaven; for He makes His sun shine on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors (politicians) do the same? And if you greet your brothers only (those who agree with you) do not the tax collectors (politicians) do the same (Mt 5:44-47)? A divisive spirit has en- tered the Christian world through politics. It is not unusual to go to church and hear politicians either named or described by the speaker so vividly that there is no doubt to whom the speaker is referring. It is clear which side of the issue is being discussed, and that the listeners are expected to agree. Jesus lived in a time of horrendous politics, but he never directly mentioned it except in answer to a ques- tion concerning taxes. He said, "Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's (Mt 22:15- 22). His message was al- ways about God's mes- sage to the world "repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," and "come all you who are tired and weary and I will give you rest." Should we be involved in politics? Certainly, but as a representative of our Heavenly Father, we must always be kind, merciful and just. By maintaining loving attitudes toward all, we are protecting our own heart and the spirit of others (Ro 12:17-18). ShirleyEngebretsenisa retired pastoral counselor.
