Faceit:Peopleareliv- ing longer than ever be- fore, and health care costs are climbing higher ev- ery year. Which brings me to the sub- ject of long- term care. You might assume it's just about nursing homes, but it re- fers to more. Long-term care means getting the assistance you need at home as well. You could live to 100 and never need long- term care. You could end up needing assistance in daily living long before retirement, or you could fit somewhere in be- tween. Maybe your knees go. Or your eyes. Or you become a little too for- getful. No one likes to think about it, but the human body is not built to live forever. You need to be informed and pre- pared. Long-term care in- surance usually covers the costs for care that aren't picked up by reg- ular health insurance or Medicare. If you need as- sistance to properly feed, clothe or bathe yourself, long-term care insurance could pay the bill, de- pending on the type and amount of coverage you buy. But because it's ex- pensive, long-term care insurance isn't typically a product lower-income in- dividuals are able to af- ford. If you're middle-class, you're likely to be hit the hardest by the high cost of long-term care because you're likely to spend most of your assets if you require extended long- term assistance. You may not qualify for Medic- aid assistance, yet paying your own bills for long- term care could break you. If you've got a lot of dough (assets of $1 mil- lion or more), you can probably pay for your own long-term care from savings and investments, although you might want insurance anyway to pre- serve your estate for your kids or grandkids. If you fall into this category, make sure you are work- ing with a reputable fi- nancial planner who can assist you in setting up your finances so you are not bombarded by taxes and inflation. More than likely, you need a variety of investments and in- surance policies working together for you. If you need a referral for a rep- utable financial planner, I recommend you look for a fee-only professional in your area. The National Association of Personal Financial Planners web- site is a good place to lo- cate an advisor. If you opt for long- term care insurance, plan on paying dearly over many years for coverage you may or may not ever use. That's the way insur- ance works. If you don't think there's any way that you'll be able to af- ford the premiums, all is not lost. Perhaps some of these options will work in your situation to help you fund your long-term care needs: — Save enough money during working years to pay for your care. Start now. — Endeavor to remain healthy enough so as not to require outside care. Fire up the treadmill; join a gym. — Pay to live in an as- sisted-care community, which may include some personal assistance along with room and board. Shop around. — Look for other sources of funding, such as a life insurance riders or reverse mortgage. Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary? Stony Creek Horsemen's Association volunteers re- placed the wooden seating in the center section of the grandstand at the Brother Moore Arena, in Stonyford, in preparation for the 74th Annual Stonyford Rodeo, May 6-7. Through networking, the horsemen were able to ob- tain surplus material at a minimal cost, enough to do all three sections of the grandstand. This year, us- ing only volunteer labor, the center section of seating will be replaced along with the two center sections of steps. In coming years the remaining two end sections and steps will be replaced. Tickets are available now at www.stonycreekhorse- men.org and at Boot Barn in Chico and Anderson and Bucke's Feed & Grain in Or- land. Grandstand upgraded by horseman's association Better Business Bureau A new e-mail con tries to trick recipients into down- loading a malware-infected attachment. Sounds stan- dard, right? It is, except this con has its target's name and address and claims to be monitoring their behavior online. You receive an e-mail informing you that you've been caught performing fraudulent activities on- line. One version claims you've been using PayPal to illegally transfer funds. The accusation is false, of course, but the e-mail has your real name and ad- dress — although targets report that the address is frequently out of date. The e-mail's author warns that someone has been monitoring your on- line activities and collect- ing evidence to take to the police. The scammer claims to have attached the incriminating evidence to the e-mail, so you can see it and respond. No matter how curious you are, don't download the file. The attachment adds malware to your de- vice, which scammers then use to capture passwords or hunt for sensitive infor- mation. Be wary of unexpected e- mails that contain links or attachments . Do not click on links or open files in un- familiar e-mails. Check the reply e-mail address. One easy way to spot an e-mail scam is to look at the reply e-mail. The address should be on a company domain, such a jsmith[at]company.com. Don't believe what you see. Just because an e-mail looks real, doesn't mean it is. Scammers can fake any- thing from a company logo to the "Sent" e-mail ad- dress. Consider how the or- ganization normally con- tacts you. If an organiza- tion normally reaches you by mail, be suspicious if you suddenly start receiv- ing e-mails or text mes- sages without ever opting into the new communica- tions. Be cautious of generic e-mails. Scammers try to cast a wide net by includ- ing little or no specific in- formation in their fake e- mails. Be especially wary of messages you have not sub- scribed to or companies you have never done busi- ness with in the past.
