4A Daily News – Friday, August 31, 2012 Romney accepts nomination in prime time TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mitt Romney launched a full-speed fall campaign for the White House on Thursday with a prime- time speech to a unified Republican convention and a nation divided polit- ically as it struggles in a weak economy. Though Romney has been pursuing the presi- dency for the better part of a decade, his accep- tance speech was an important chance to intro- duce himself and forge a connection with millions of Americans who feel they need to know him better. ''We believe in Ameri- ca, even though the last four years have been full of difficulties and disap- pointments, doubt and despair,'' the former Mass- achusetts governor wrote supporters in an online fundraising appeal a few hours before he spoke. Romney's speech was the traditional convention finale, and thousands of red, white and blue bal- loons nestled in netting high above the floor, ready to be released on cue once the Republican candidate completed his remarks. Ryan ignores own record in sharp- elbowed WORLD BRIEFING GOP speech WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Convention is drawing to a close with some factually slippery statements from its presi- dential ticket. On the eve of presiden- tial nominee Mitt Rom- ney's speech closing the convention Thursday night, running mate Paul Ryan ignored conspicuous parts of his own record on budget cuts, the stimulus and Medicare in his haste to accuse President Barack Obama of taking the econ- omy off the rails. In a brief fundraising email before taking the stage himself, Romney made the unemployment picture even grimmer than it is, and his campaign unveiled a new website with selective descriptions about only some of his work at Bain Capital, the venture capital firm where Romney earned millions of dollars in profits. It's unclear just how much detail he will pro- vide on Thursday night, the pinnacle of the Republican National Con- vention in Tampa, Fla. The former Massachu- setts governor has spoken broadly in the past about the importance of prayer and belief in God, but has not discussed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints. However, the roster of speakers promises at least a glimpse into his nearly 14 years of service as a lay Mormon pastor around Boston. The invo- cation will be given by Ken Hutchins, a retired Northborough, Mass., police chief, who was also a Mormon leader in the state, and Grant Bennett, who served as a church counselor to Romney, is scheduled to offer remarks. ''I think this is a speech where he's going to talk a lot about what's informed his values, what's informed his out- look. Of course his faith is an important part of that,'' Romney aide Kevin Mad- den said in Tampa this week. ''It's an important part of who he is as a hus- band and a father. And so I think you can expect some of that.'' Romney was a bishop in the Boston suburb of Bel- mont, a job akin to the pastor of a congregation. He then served as a stake president, the top Mor- mon authority in his region, which meant he presided over several con- Starting in the 1980s, the probes of the deaths of two terrorist suspects marks the end of a wide- ranging criminal investi- gation by federal prosecu- tor John Durham into interrogation practices during the presidency of George W. Durham's probe into another episode involving the CIA began in January 2008 when the Justice Department chose him to conduct a criminal inves- tigation into the agency's destruction of videotapes it had made of its interro- gations of terrorist sus- pects. gregations in a district similar to a diocese. Weakening Isaac hovers over Louisiana NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Isaac hovered over Louisiana for a third day Thursday, shedding more than a foot of additional rain that forced authori- ties to hurriedly evacuate areas ahead of the storm and rescue hundreds of people who could not escape as the rapidly ris- ing waters swallowed entire neighborhoods. The huge spiral weath- er system weakened to a tropical depression as it crawled inland, but it caught many places off guard by following a meandering, unpre- dictable path. The storm's excruciatingly slow movement meant that Isaac practically parked over low-lying towns and threw off great sheets of water for hours. ''I was blindsided. Nobody expected this,'' said Richard Musatchia, who fled his water-filled home in LaPlace, north- west of New Orleans. Inside the fortified lev- ees that protected New Orleans, bursts of sun- shine streamed through the thick clouds, and life began to return to normal. But beyond the city, peo- ple got their first good look at Isaac's damage: Hundreds of homes were underwater. Half the state was without power. Thou- sands were staying at shelters. And the damage may not be done. Even more rain was expected in Louisiana before the storm finally drifts into Arkansas and Missouri. suspects WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Depart- ment announced Thurs- day it has ended its inves- tigation into CIA interro- gations of terrorist detainees without bring- ing criminal charges. Man in assault of Texas girl Eric McGowen wasn't in court when jurors found him guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child or later when they returned with the sentence, which also included a $10,000 fine. The 20-year-old had been free on bail and he skipped out during a break in proceedings Wednesday, the first day of testimony. The judge issued an arrest warrant for McGowen Wednesday and allowed testimony to resume Thursday. Jurors returned with the guilty verdict after deliberating for about 20 minutes. Then, after brief court proceedings on his pun- ishment, they decided his sentence in less than 30 minutes. Prosecutors say the girl, who was 11 years old at the time, was sexually assaulted on at least five occasions. - 15th Beef 'N Brew Sept. 15, 2012 Downtown Red Bluff Red Bluff's 3rd Annual Beef Appetizers Brew Tasting Plum Crazy, The Gold Exchange Brownpapertickets.com For info: 530-833-9961 Tickets @The Loft, Mobile Pet Vaccinations RAIN OR SHINE VACCINE CLINIC DOGS ON LEASH Distemper/Parvo (6-in-1) and Rabies.............$ 15 Distemper/Parvo (6-in-1) Corona, Rabies & Bordetella.......$ Distemper/Parvo (6-in-1).............$ Rabies Only....$ PRESCRIPTION FLEA PREVENTION ALSO AVAILABLE 25 10 7 Feline Distemper (3-in-1) and Rabies............. $ Rabies Only.... $ Leukemia.........$ All Three..........$ CATS IN BOX 15 7 12 25 SATURDAY, SEPT. 1ST RED BLUFF 501 Madison, Red Bluff 12:00-2:00 MOBILE PET Reynolds Ranch & Farm Supply VACCINATIONS (916) 983-4686 (Not affiliated with any other vaccine clinic) CASH ONLY LOW COST
