For Alumni And Friends oF the CAliForniA deltA ChApter no. 24 • spring 2017 sAn diego stAte university, sigmA phi epsilon inFormAtion www.CAdeltAAlumni.org Cal Delta News V iews & MACNEIL SCHOLARSHIP A POWERFUL GIFT O ne year ago, Cal Delta launched the Tim MacNeil Memorial Scholarship in memory of Brother Tim MacNeil '66, who died tragically in 2007. Established through a generous lead gift from Tim's one-time roommate, Dennis Tilton '66, the $1,000 scholarship is offered to one deserving member each year who best exemplifies the qualities of scholarship, leadership, and the spirit of fraternal brotherhood. Selection is made in the spring semester and awarded the following fall. The first-ever recipient was Cal Delta RLC junior Morgan Hatch '18. Morgan now serves as vice president of member development and maintains a 3.56 GPA. The significance of this award is that without the scholarship, Morgan would most likely have had to leave the chapter. Dennis' goal is to raise $25,000 to endow this scholarship into perpetuity. So far, through the generosity of dozens of brothers, the fund stands at more than $15,000. Tax-deductible contributions can be sent to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, 310 S. Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23220. Make sure you mark your check "CA Delta MacNeil Fund." To donate online, go to www.sigep.org. Click on "chapter scholarships-give now." You will find a drop-down menu that lists the CA Delta MacNeil scholarship. Your AVC believes that Brother MacNeil would be extremely gratified to know that his legacy will have a positive impact on future leaders. Scholarship Requirements T o be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must have been an undergraduate member of the chapter for at least three years. He must be an active undergraduate member in good standing at the time of award presentation and demonstrate a need of financial assistance. The MacNeil scholar will have demonstrated strong leadership quali- ties either in the Cal Delta Chapter or in university student government, campus organizations, or college activities (Tim served as president of the chapter and editor-in-chief of Del Sudoeste, the college yearbook, and was a member of Blue Key and Oceotl). The MacNeil scholar will be a person who exemplifies the trait of brotherhood and shows high academic achievement (3.2 GPA or above). Why I Give "A mong my SigEp brothers, there was a generally universally held feeling about the fraternity—it was a real turning point for most of us and a seminal experience in our growing up. We all really value the bonds that were formed during that time and that feeling has carried over in a desire to donate to the fraternity. When SigEp set up the MacNeil Scholarship Fund, there was a new opportunity to give back and provide a continu- ity for the kids who are there today—I know a scholarship fund would have been helpful when I was there. One of the things that fraternities do is to provide a commu- nity. You have someplace to go and a group of people who share an affinity. The value of that is incalculable and if there's some- thing I can do to promote that experience, I feel a responsibility to do so." "I donated to the MacNeil Scholarship Fund because Tim was a great guy. He was a year ahead of me at SDSU and when he graduated he went on to law school. When he worked as an assistant district attorney in San Diego County, I was actively assisting the district attorney's office in their white collar crime program. I was over there often and got to watch Tim's skill in trying cases. When he left the DA's office, Tim went into private practice with Richard Sorem '65. During that time, I watched Tim really take care of fraternity brothers in a variety of ways as they had a need for legal counsel. To my knowledge, Tim always tried to help, and he was usually successful, some- times in a major way. It was just in Tim's nature to be helpful. I admired and respected Tim, so contributing to a fund that the Foundation is administering in his name seemed like the type of donation I should make."
