Building Blocks of Success Nicola Heskett '90 Reflects on Her Theta Omega Experiences W hen Nicola Heskett '90 went through recruitment at KU, she was "impressed with the warmth and intellect the members displayed throughout the recruitment process." The close friendships she formed with the women in her new member class, especially her big sister, Amy Heidersbach '88, have continued through the highs and lows of post- college life. Nicola grew up in a very small, rural community. She was only one of three students in her high school class, and the only female, who attended KU. One of her fondest memories is the feeling of joining a big sisterhood of women on Bid Day. "My new member class expanded my network of friends exponentially and gave me a sense of family away from home." After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from KU with a bachelor's degree of liberal arts and sciences, with majors in political science with department honors and English, she went on to law school at the University of Minnesota. She then worked as an associate and was later elected to the partnership at Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP, in Kansas City, Missouri. She left the law firm at the end of 2007 and worked for the Obama/Biden campaign and administration, which was one of the highlights of her professional career. "The memories of my time on the campaign, the election, and the inauguration in January 2009 will forever be wonderful, empowering memories," she shared. After leaving the public service sector, she was hired as the executive director of the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired in Kansas City, Missouri, in July 2013 and continues to serve in that role. For Nicola, she has found that the secret to success means "listening to and collecting different viewpoints, taking the time to assess options, being well read, and not being afraid to go against the current." Nicola's professional success and passion for politics have direct roots to her time at KU and as an undergraduate member of Tri Delta. "I was a university student senator, so between that and being a member of Tri Delta, I was very involved in campus-wide activities. Learning to live and work with dozens of women from different backgrounds was an essential building block for future success in any organization," she said. Nicola and her husband, Walt, live in Kansas City, Missouri. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, writing, and improving her photography skills. You can connect with Nicola at nrheskett@ CCVI.org.
