Hoevener '90 Jeff C. Van Voorhis '92 Jeremy S. Bannwart '93 F inding your c o n n e c t i o n s in college can be difficult at times. Dan Huge '82 had looked at dorm life and wasn't quite convinced it was the fit for him— he wanted more. "I was looking for some level of connection, to have a little more camaraderie. The Beta Sig house showed me that, and as a lifelong Lutheran, it was important to me to stick to my roots by joining a Lutheran- based entity," he says. Looking back, Dan reminisces on his favorite moments in Beta Chapter. "The formal dances were always fun and always well done. For Homecoming, we used to have a get-together of actives and alumni at house and the Grotto," Dan says. One of his other favorite moments was competing against other chapters in sporting events. "I know being there helped me on a number of fronts, such as becoming a more social person and learning how to interact with a number of different folks at different levels," he says. Dan works for the State of Indiana as the public finance director. On a typical day he manages multiple projects, attends legislative meetings, and monitors debt portfolios—finding new ways to deliver funding for projects at the lowest cost for the state of Indiana. He appreciates the moments when he's able to make a difference. "Since I've been in municipal finance for 20 years, you really see projects get completed that you had involvement in on the front end." Dan says. "Some of them are really cool, such as Lucas Oil Stadium, Banker's Life Fieldhouse, Victory Field, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway." Dan is working on the bond issued for a new hospital called the Neuro-Diagnostic Institute, a state-of-the-art, state-run mental health hospital in Indianapolis. "Being able to be involved in projects you know are going to change people's lives, it makes me take a step back and realize how lucky I am to be involved in something like that," he says. In his career, Dan has learned valuable life lessons. He suggests to young alumni to be flexible and follow your heart. "Sometimes, because of your degree, you may feel as if you should stay in this specific area of whatever you learned. There are always opportunities to branch out and increase your knowledge base. Don't stop learning, and always take in new information," Dan says. He also says to develop a strong network, both personally and professionally. "Find a good mentor to bounce things off of and to attain guidance from," he says. "God generally provides a path, maybe one that we weren't expecting, but there's always a path." Dan and his wife, Barb, live in Fishers, Ind. He enjoys traveling with Barb on church mission trips to the Dominican Republic and spending time with his new grandson, Colton. ChRistiAn LEADERship AwARD sChoLARship F inal interviews for the Christian Leadership Award scholarship were held on Saturday, March 4, and Sunday, March 5. Evan Albersmeyer '07, Jeffrey Williams '09, Jake Cronauer '11, and Robert Ehlerding '15 held the interviews at the Chapter House in West Lafayette, Ind. The actives paired each applicant with an active member to provide a tour of the house, and a nacho/veggie/fruit bar was provided. We would like to thank the active Chapter for ensuring the house was clean and presentable. Ten finalists were interviewed, and we expect to announce a winner in April.
