L aine Johnson Guerry '05 may have gone to high school deep in the heart of (Southlake) Texas, but she found herself in Lawrence, Kansas, for her undergraduate experience. "While I was excited to go to college out of state, I was a little apprehensive about being far away from home," Laine shared. Luckily, she found herself a home away from home deep in the heart of The Hill at 1325 W. Campus Road. The frenzy that always came with recruitment and helping new members get adjusted also offered Laine some clarity about her future. She served as an assistant new member educator one year, and found that "serving in that position helped me realize how much I enjoy working with others," she said. After graduating with a bachelor's in psychology with a business minor, Laine continued her education at KU, and earned an educational specialist degree in school psychology through the School of Education. Now she is able to continue helping and guiding others through her work with the North Kansas City School District as a school psychologist for two elementary schools. "While my job requires me to wear many different hats, the aspect of my job that I do most is evaluating students for special education services and leading the special education teams in my buildings. While my job can be pretty overwhelming sometimes, I love the kids and they make it all worth it," Laine emphasized. She has stayed close with several sisters from her new member class, thanks to social media and fun events like weddings and baby showers. She and Katie Slater Alcantara '04 have each been each other's maids of honor, and they love going out to dinner with their husbands. Laine and her husband, Mike, live in Prairie Village, Kansas, with their big, rambunctious dog, Oliver. When she is not spending time with her family and friends, Laine "loves decorating and channeling my inner Joanna Gaines." She and Mike also enjoy traveling, and recently spent time in Costa Rica and celebrated Thanksgiving in New York City. You can connect with Laine at laineguerry@gmail.com. T he Xi Corporation Board is busy finalizing our plan for the summer. We are starting the second phase of construction this summer, which includes renovating and expanding the second floor south bathroom, converting rooms 19 and 20 into one suite, moving the courtesy kitchen to the side of the dining room against the living room wall, and moving the entrance from the date room to the dining room. Depending on the costs, we are also planning to replace the second floor windows on the front of the chapter house. Our ability to complete these projects is thanks to our generous alumnae. If you have made a pledge that is not completed, please keep making those payments. It is important that all pledges be fulfilled to maintain Xi's finances. Of course, your donations and support are always welcome. We could not have embarked on this project without your support, and we are grateful to each of our dedicated alumnae. Additionally, we are looking for a few more alumnae to join the Xi Corporation Board. There are monthly meetings at the chapter house, and including the meetings, joining the board is probably a six- to 10-hour commitment each month. If you are interested in attending a meeting or joining the board, please contact me at plesant@earthlink.net. Each and every volunteer truly makes a difference; we welcome your contributions and look forward to hearing from you.
