it really makes your heart sing. I even rent them when I travel—there is no better way to see the city." Life abroad has made it challenging, but Brian does his best to keep in touch with his brothers. "When I come back to the States I try to catch up over a meal or a coffee. Sometimes it's only once a year or even every two to three years. Although it's possible to stay in touch virtually, I would rather catch up on the news in person." Recently, Brian made an around-the-world trip and saw brothers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Manchester. He also spent some time in Lisbon, Vienna, Doha, Bangalore, and Bangkok before returning to Singapore. "Go see the world—don't sit on the couch! Nothing beats experiencing things in person. Brothers, if you are ever in Asia, look me up. In Hoc Signo Vinces." E-mail: brian.jennett@gmail.com 2 THE CAL SIG J oining Sigma Chi laid a solid foundation for Pete Kim '97 to build his future. Pete was a high school classmate of David Saah '96 and recalls, "David talked me into rushing and the rest is history." As an undergraduate, Pete looked forward to the Big Game Lunch. "We always had a great time. Even as an alumnus I enjoy making it back for the traditional lunch and spending quality time with brothers." Leadership opportunities offered by Alpha Beta helped Pete cultivate skills that have been invaluable in his career. "I had my first true leadership experience and learned how to work with others as a team toward a common goal." The friendships Pete gained have stood the test of time, and he says, "I'm fortunate to have a network of close friends whose loyalty is beyond a doubt." The confidence gained from his time in the chapter pushed Pete to never stop trying new things. "Some of my successes include talking my way into a sales and business development role at Google, even though I didn't have any experience in either, and then later developing dynamic retargeting, an online advertising tactic that is now standard in the industry." Pete's success at Google led him to begin his own company, MightyHive, with Lexi Viripaeff '01. Together they grew it into a profitable company with offices and clients around the world. The success of his company has allowed for several Alpha Beta members to join the team, including Scott Kaplan '13, Nich Seo '15, and Jeff Leong '16. Pete advises undergraduates and younger alumni who are early in their careers to be ambitious, but also to take time to explore. "When you're young, you have a little bit of flexibility; use World Travels and Brotherhood Help Brian Jennett '94 See the Big Picture B eing part of Sigma Chi gave Brian Jennett '94 more than he expected. "I am glad I had the experience of meeting such an amazing group of people. I didn't realize those relationships would be so strong, or that they would last so long. Often a lot of time passes, you lose contact, people change, relationships evolve, but the bond of Sigma Chi remains." Brian has spent about 12 years living in Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, and Singapore. He has also worked in India and the Middle East. His career started in architecture and then he studied urban planning. He worked in both fields before gradually shifting to corporate real estate consulting and now he is a real estate economist. "Architecture is certainly not an easy field—in terms of pay, work hours, etc.—but you get some emotional compensation from loving what you do. It takes a long time to learn how to put a building together or find your own opportunities for creative expression." He says urban planning has helped him understand the forces behind development and what is needed to help foster and accommodate growth. "It's a real privilege to study places and people. I love that you never stop learning and you never get bored. It's a big picture profession; we study physical and social infrastructure, economics and finance, crime, health, the environment, culture, etc. I feel like I am doing something larger than myself and helping solve some of the world's problems." In his free time, Brian sits in cafes and either reads or watches the world go by. He also travels, exploring cities and taking photos of people and places. "I also ride a Vespa scooter. It's more than just a mode of transport; Brian Jennett '94 and pledge brother Mario Carlos '92. Brian Jennett '94 in Lisbon in January 2017. Alpha Beta Set up Pete Kim '97 for Success
