works were scored by a group of community vol- unteers. "This event is a collab- oration between Tehama County Reading Council, Tehama Reads, Expect More Tehama, and mem- bers of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma," Stroman said. "We give them the opportunity to hear a published author, which often provides ad- ditional motivation for students to continue pur- suing their efforts in writing. As a culminating event, the writing contest and celebration brings to- gether students, teachers and families to recognize the students' accomplish- ments. The annual writ- ing contest and celebra- tion along with the author visit are clear examples of our community support- ing excellence in educa- tion." Students met at the the- ater in sessions through- out the morning and early afternoon Tuesday and Wednesday to hear Farley speak and at the recogni- tion celebration. "Today we celebrate reading and writing, which is a gateway to suc- cess," Farley said. Farley said she wanted students and adults alike to realize that recognition of the students wasn't just the definition of the word in that something is famil- iar, but was in the sense of acknowledging a skill they had. "We're all a lot more than the way we look and reading and writing is often looked at as either useful or art," Farley said. "Most people think cre- ative writing is art and other writing is useful, but writing can be both. The great thing about writing is you can have it any way you want." Farley talked about her book series about horses. Being allergic to horses the series was mostly writ- ten through research and an experience participat- ing in a cattle drive. Making up stories for her was a way as a sick child to be able to have an adventure, Farley said. Writing is a way to share one's life experiences and to help one remember de- tails of an event in their life or to see the world through another's eyes in getting into the mind set of a character. "I want you to know that whether you're a kid or an adult the beauty of writing your own story is that you get to stand up for what you believe in," Farley said. "You can use your senses to remem- ber and share your ex- periences. You have sto- ries that no one else does. That's incredibly valuable. If you don't share your sto- ries no one else will."
