Waitingisatimeof testing our faith. Think of Elijah's words to king Ahab in 1 Kings 18:41, "…there is the sound of the abun- dance of rain." He spoke those words while there was still a drought. James 5:17 says that it had not rained for 3 years. There was not a cloud in the sky to indicate that rain was coming, yet Elijah spoke confidently in faith that it was coming in abundance. Use this analogy for what you are waiting for when there is no evidence of an answer. Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." The Amplified says, "…faith perceiving as real fact what is not re- vealed to the senses." The evidence will come after we believe God's word to us. Waiting for the Lord's answer is worth it. As we wait He is purifying our faith to make it stron- ger. The heat of the fiery trial of waiting is causing the hidden dross of lies, doubt, fear, and unbelief to surface. Beware. Don't give in to the temptations to do something in your own strength, even dia- loging in your mind about options. Don't fall for that wile of the devil. Waiting is a time of rest. We cease from our own activity of trying to figure something out in our mind. Hebrews 4:3 says that when we believe what He has said we will enter into rest. Verse 10 described that rest. It says, "For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His." By faith we see and wait because He spoke. Each situation requires fresh faith. David demonstrated this to us in 2 Samuel 5:18- 25. I encourage you to read it. There were two ex- act circumstances, yet Da- vid inquired of the Lord each time. He did not go out the second time with his first instruction. He saw the same situation but waited until he had the Lord's fresh instruction. I love verse 24 and use it a lot in my 'waiting' trials. It says, "…when you hear the sound…then you shall ad- vance quickly…" Here are two interesting verses. Does the Lord hear 'faith' as you wait? Gala- tians 3:2 says, "This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by words of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" Verse 5 says, "There He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" The Lord is waiting to be gracious to us. There- fore we must wait be- cause His ways are far higher than our ways. As we wait, the hidden lies of the enemy that have had a stronghold in our thought processes will be exposed. Those hidden lies were un- dermining our faith. Now at that last moment when we think there is no way, the lies will surface and we have the opportunity to see them for what they are. Hidden lies cause hes- itation in our obedience. We renounce those lies and affirm His truths that will take us on in our walk with the Lord. 2 Corin- thians 4:2 says, "But we have renounced the hid- den things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by mani- festation of the truth com- mending ourselves to ev- ery man's conscience in the sight of God." 'The sound of abun- dance of rain' were pro- phetic, life-giving words spoken in the face of a 3 year drought. If you have a need, instead of de- spairing, speak God's pro- phetic, life-giving words of Philippians 4:19, 'My God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Je- sus.' Make His words your own in the face of your drought-need. Waiting is the posture of trust. We can trust Him to fulfill His word because He is watching over His word to perform it. Isaiah 55:10 says, "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall pros- per in the thing for which I sent it." If you have never put your faith and trust in Je- sus, by accepting Him as your Lord and Savior, you are living in drought. I urge you to consider your drought-need in light of His promise. Romans 10:13 says, "Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." MarilynAdamshas published numerous short ebooks, as well as a paperback called "Freedom! From Past Hurts." GODTALK Waiting in faith Marilyn Adams By Daniel Estrin and Joshua Goodman The Associated Press JERUSALEM It's not quite Moses' 40 years in the des- ert, but for nine strug- gling Venezuelan converts to Judaism, their tortuous journey to a better life in the promised land finally brought them to Israel on Thursday. They paused inside the arrivals hall of Israel's inter- national airport for a prayer before being whisked into a minibus and taken to an im- migration absorption center — a tidy, low-slung building with simple beds — in an Is- raeli desert city. Israel's Law of Return gives Jews the world over the right to settle in the Jew- ish state. But the Venezue- lan converts were denied en- try late last year over con- cerns they weren't involved enough with Venezuela's Jewish community and were looking to take advan- tage of Israel's immigration policies to flee the troubled South American nation. Israeli authorities re- versed that decision in Jan- uary, citing the humanitar- ian crisis in Venezuela. As part of a face-saving deal between Israel's Interior Ministry, headed by an ul- tra-Orthodox Jewish min- ister, and the liberal Jew- ish movement to which the nine belonged, the converts were made to undergo a re- peat conversion and join an "established religious com- munity" for several months in Israel before being eligi- ble for citizenship. The group marked its conversion — for the second time — with a ritual immer- sion last Sunday at a syna- gogue in Colombia before setting off for Israel. The protracted fight over the "Venezuelan Nine" un- derscores the fierce debate in Israel over who is a Jew and how a religion that doesn't proselytize grapples with an increasing number of converts, especially from Latin America, who have found their way to Judaism outside traditional paths like marrying someone of the faith. It's also taken its toll on the nine Venezuelans. For years, Franklin Perez has lived a Jewish life. He wears a skullcap, gave He- brew names to his children and traveled three hours by road to Caracas to buy ko- sher meat — when he could find it. His embrace of Judaism began when he moved to the Venezuelan city of Maracay in 2004 after losing his job as a philosophy professor during a political shake-up at his university. He fell in with a group of messianic Jews who combine Chris- tianity with Jewish tradi- tions. Perez's curiosity had already been piqued dur- ing his childhood by a Jew- ish great-grandmother in an otherwise Roman Cath- olic family, and he led the group in study of religious texts. Over time, a hardcore nu- cleus was drawn to bedrock Judaism. In 2011 they found Juan Mejia, a Conservative movement rabbi who lives in Oklahoma but returns a few times a year to his native Co- lombia. He led them in six hours of study online each week, and after a year they traveled to study with him for a week in Santa Marta, Colombia. They returned in 2014, and under the super- vision of a religious court of three rabbis took a dip in the warm waters of the Ca- ribbean to complete their conversion. "This is not a new thing, this is not a fad," Mejia said. "These people didn't decide yesterday, 'Oh, Venezuela is going down the drain, let's find someplace to go.'" Leaders of the cloistered Jewish community in Cara- cas were doubtful of their motives because they had never had contact with the group, even though the nine had been quietly wel- comed by a dying commu- nity of Orthodox Jews in the nearby city of Valencia, which needed them for the 10-male quorum required for public worship in a syn- agogue. According to an official in Israel familiar with the case, there was evidence suggesting some of the ap- plicants converted to Juda- ism to take advantage of Is- raeli social benefits, includ- ing health insurance. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to dis- cuss the converts' personal status. But after a stormy parlia- mentary committee hear- ing in Israel, immigration officials said the nine could come. Perez freely admits that if it weren't for Venezuela's collapse they would have never looked to leave.
