He said the time was right to reunite with the Giants, and he would have been unfulfilled if it never happened. He said he wished his father, Bobby, could see him now. Most telling, he said he owed it to his father to try being a major league hitting coach, and although it didn't work out with the Marlins, he was grateful to have had that opportunity. What he didn't say: be- ing a hitting coach is a more grueling job than ever. Maybe one year of it was enough. Maybe it's better to be able to roam. Easier to keep your distance that way. Bonds FROM PAGE 1 Animatedcoaches • Frank Martin, South Carolina. The Gamecocks' unexpected run into the Sweet 16 means we get to seemorescreaming,stomp- ing and death stares from the big man in the big suit. • Sean Miller, Arizona. Coaches with the intensity he played with at Pitts- burgh, has yet to sweat through a shirt in this year's tournament. • Bob Huggins, West Vir- ginia. Huggy taught Martin a thing or two about side- line vitriol, spews venom with the best of them. • John Calipari, Ken- tucky. Coach Cal can re- cruit and he can shout, too. • Roy Williams, North Carolina. Don't let that Southern charm fool you. Coach Roy is a dadgum competitor. Key players • Josh Jackson, Kansas. Dynamic freshman makes the highlight reels multi- ple times a game, makes a great tandem with Mason. • Malik Monk, Kentucky. Can heat up in a hurry. Just ask North Carolina. • Allonzo Trier, Arizona. The Wildcats' go-to player at crunch time. • Justin Jackson, North Carolina. Long, athletic, scores inside and out, car- rying a big load with Joel Berry II fighting an ankle injury. • Derrick Walton Jr., Michigan. He's been a big reason for the Wolverines' story book postseason run. • Trevon Bluiett, Xavier. Hampered by injuries ear- lier this season, rounding back into form at just the right time. Sweet 16 FROM PAGE 1 have forced turnovers on more than one-quarter of the opponent's possessions. Gonzaga has committed 20 turnovers just once all season and averages just 11.3 per game. Few had his scout team purposely foul multiple times on ev- ery possession to simulate how tough it is to deal with the press. "It's not like we're go- ing to be surprised about their pressure or anything like that," point guard Ni- gel Williams-Goss said. "We just have to execute our game plan." MACK VS. MILLER For the second time in three years, Miller faces his for- mer Xavier team and as- sistant, Chris Mack, in the Sweet 16. Mack took over the Musketeers after Miller left following the 2009 sea- son. The teams met in this round in 2015 with the Wildcats winning 68-60. "My players don't care about Sean, just as Sean's players don't care about me," Mack said. "It is about our teams." SUPERSUBS Gonzaga and West Virginia both feature important subs. Mountain- eers guard Tarik Phillip was voted the sixth man of the year in the Big 12 after averaging 9.6 points and 3.1 assists per game. Phillip scored 28 points on the opening weekend of the tournament. Gon- zaga freshman center Zach Collins has averaged 10.3 points per game on 65 per- cent shooting. He had 24 points and seven blocks last weekend.
