p. 3 Phi DelTa TheTa Charley Meyer '86 Found Brotherhood for Life in Phi Delta Theta C harley Meyer '86 came to DePauw University with no preconceived notions about fraternity life. "I went through rush with an open mind. I identified with the men of Phi Delta Theta; they seemed genuine, fun, and had a real sense of brotherhood. I pledged and moved in to my home for the next four years. I was Phi Delt before I even picked my first class at DePauw." Being a member of Indiana Zeta Chapter has impacted Charley ever since those first days on campus. "I will never forget my last Chapter meeting. That is when it really started to sink in that our brotherhood wouldn't stop at graduation; it was something I would carry with me. When I was looking for my first job, when deciding on the best man for my wedding, when I worked with my first investment client, when I was looking to hire summer interns, when I negotiated the sale of my business, all were Phi Delts." When Charley lost his stepfather 25 years ago, he was inundated with support from the brotherhood. "It really meant something. I have two families. I was blessed to have a wonderful birth family and blessed with a wonderful brotherhood in Phi Delta Theta." One of his proudest Phi Delta Theta moments was when his son, Charley Meyer Jr. '18, was initiated as a member of the Indiana Zeta Chapter in 2015. "I was able to slip in to the initiation ceremony and place a pin on my son. He didn't know I was coming, so surprising him made it even more special." Over the years, Charley has stayed close to CJ Jonston '83, John Metaxas '86, Stuart Smith '84, Steve Schroer '84, and Bill Oakley '83. "A lot of us started getting together more as our kids started looking at colleges. We are spread out across the country, but when we get together we just pick up where we left off." Charley is a partner and director for Plancorp LLC, a financial services firm in St. Louis, Mo. He has always been fascinated with finance and investments and has focused most of his career helping institutions and nonprofits manage their money. "It stems back to when I was a student and the Indiana Zeta Chapter brought the Special Olympics to DePauw. The event was all about the kids and watching their genuine expression of joy. We were serving others just for the sake of giving back. When I work with nonprofits, they have more invested than just money. We help them fulfill their mission of helping others." In his free time, Charley spends time with his family and serves on numerous boards, including the White House Jesuit Retreat Inc. and the NCADA, which works to reduce or prevent the harms of alcohol and other drug use through education, intervention, and advocacy. This past year has been a banner year for the men of 446 Anderson Street. Twenty-three men joined the Chapter so that numbers rose to over 100 for the second year in a row. We also had a strong academic semester, placing in the top three in grades with a GPA over the all-men's and all-fraternity averages. Phi Delt had strong performances on the athletic field as well. We had seven varsity captains on eight sports teams. Twenty-four varsity athletes were named to the DePauw honor roll, more than any other fraternity. The soccer team featured 13 Phi Delts, including sophomore Andrew Gold '19, who was named NCAC first team all-conference in soccer. The Tigers won the Monon Bell for the first time in eight years with Hunter Sego '19 starting as punter. Phi Delts anchored the DePauw men's tennis team with eight men on the roster. Senior Dan Rodefeld '17 was named NCAC first team all- conference, along with senior Pat Farrell '17, who was named second team. As the baseball season heats up, 23 Phis are suiting up for the Tigers, seven of whom will start in the field, along with the majority of the bullpen. All four captains are Phi Delts. Last season pitcher Riley Futterknecht '17 was named NCAC first team all-conference and Tate Stewart '17 was named NCAC second team. Off the field, the men of Phi Delta Theta performed over 1,000 hours of community service. The DePauw Dance Marathon executive board featured four men from Phi Delta Theta and more than 30 Phi Delts participated. The event raised over $89,000 in a record-breaking performance. Brothers consistently spend an hour and half a week volunteering and developing important friendships with Greencastle students with learning disabilities. All of our men are living up to the standards of friendship, sound learning, and moral rectitude. I am truly proud to be a Phi! Yours in the Bond, Jack Rotman '18 Chapter President
