The Spartans go to 7-1 on the year and are sched- uled to host the Foothill Cougars (6-1-1) in a double- header, with games start- ing at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday. Cardinals2-0 WILLOWS The Corn- ing Cardinals opened the Axe Baseball Tournament Thursday with a pair of wins, 12-2 over the Pierce Bears and 10-3 over host the Willows Honkers. The Cardinals went ahead early against the Bears, plating 3 in the first, then had a 7-run fourth to cop the easy win. Sophomore Jake Alex- ander, Oscar Garcia and Blain Coleman each had a pair of RBI, Garcia with a triple and Coleman a dou- ble. Six Cardinals stole safely. Devin Wunsch gave up 2 earned on 5 hits and 2 passes while striking out 5 in the complete game win. Coleman had another double in the win over Willows and Alexander and Cade Sutfin each had a pair of hits. Alexander got the win, giving up 2 earned on 3 hits and 5 walks while striking out 5 Honkers in 5 innings. Joey Caputo pitch 1 inning and struck out 2 and Dalton Kesner gave up a run on a hit and 3 walks while striking out 2 in an inning of work. Play was scheduled to resume Saturday at the tournament. Spartans FROM PAGE 1 land, U-Prep, Enterprise, Redding Christian, Hay- fork and West Valley. The boys North team in- cludes athletes from Trin- ity, Etna, Central Valley, Modoc, Yreka, Mt. Shasta, Big Valley, Foothill, Dun- smuir and Shasta. The boys South team includes athletes from Red Bluff, Corning, Los Molinos, Mercy, U-Prep, Anderson, Burney, Enterprise, Fall River, Hayfork, West Val- ley, Redding Christian and Orland. Girls play at 4 p.m., boys play at 6 p.m. Admission is a $6 donation, and chil- dren younger than 8 are free. Halftime of each game will include a 3-point shoot-out among parents of team members. Pro- ceeds from food sales will go to Special Olympics Northern California. The Redding Breakfast Lions Club began the tour- nament in 1996 as a way to promote sports and activ- ity for youth in the com- munity. This year, the 31 boys and 29 girls divided into North and South teams, will be coached by Jim Widby from Modoc High School, Jim Deaver from Enterprise High School, Jana Parker from Foothill High School, and Steve Shuster from University Preparatory School. "Both games promise an exciting afternoon of top-notch high school bas- ketball," said Lions mem- ber Guy Piche. "Both the girls and boys teams are filled with talented stars from all over the North State." Area high school ath- letic directors and coaches nominate players for the All-Star teams. A Lions Club committee sorts through the nominations and works with the volun- teer coaches to form the teams. All-Star FROM PAGE 1 The 10th-seeded Shock- ers (31-4) won their 16th in a row — the second-lon- gest streak in school his- tory — by clamping down on defense and swat- ting away shots down the stretch. Wichita State blocked eight shots and held the seventh-seeded Flyers (24-8) to a season- low 31 percent from the field. KANSAS 100, UC DAVIS 62 Frank Mason III scored 22 points and had eight as- sists as top-seeded Kan- sas won its opening game of the NCAA Tournament for an 11th straight year. Freshman Josh Jack- son, making his return after a one-game suspen- sion for an accumulation of embarrassing incidents, added 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Jayhawks (29-5). OREGON 93, IONA 77 With star big man Chris Boucher cheering in a bulky knee brace from the sidelines, Tyler Dorsey scored 24 points to lead four players in double fig- ures, and No. 3 seed Ore- gon beat 14th-seeded Iona. The Ducks (30-5) showed they have depth and sheer athleticism to make a special March run, just as coach Dana Altman hoped this week when he challenged role players to make larger contributions in shot-blocker Boucher's absence. Iona star Jordan Wash- ington gave his team a huge scare when he went down hard under Oregon's basket, screaming in pain and grabbing his lower left leg with 1:12 to go before halftime. But the senior forward returned to start the second half and fin- ished with 22 points on 10- for-16 shooting and 11 re- bounds in his final college game for the Gaels (22-13). NORTH CAROLINA 103, TEXAS SOUHERN 64 Jus- tin Jackson broke out of a shooting slump with 21 points to help top-seeded North Carolina roll past Texas Southern. The Atlantic Coast Con- ference player of the year had made just 20 of 60 shots (33 percent) and 7 of 31 3-pointers (23 percent) in his last four games. But he had 19 points by half- time in this one, help- ing the Tar Heels (28- 7) quickly eliminate any chance of an unprece- dented upset. ARKANSAS 77, SETON HALL 71 Jaylen Barford hit the go-ahead layup with 57.8 seconds left to help Ar- kansas hold off Seton Hall. Barford had 12 of his 20 points after halftime for the Razorbacks (26-9), the No. 8 seed in the South Region. That included his layup off Khadeen Car- rington's turnover at the other end, pushing Ar- kansas ahead for good as the Razorbacks scored the game's final seven points. BAYLOR 91, NEW MEXICO STATE 73 Al Freeman came off the bench to score 21 points, and No. 3 seed Baylor defeated No. 14 seed New Mexico State. Jo Lual-Acuil scored 16 points and Johnathan Motley added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears (26-7), who were upset in the first round by Georgia State and Yale the previous two years. LOUISVILLE 78, JACKSON- VILLE STATE 63 Mangok Mathiang scored 18 points and Deng Adel added 16 to help second-seeded Louis- ville pull away from Jack- sonville State. The Cardinals (25-8) have won five straight opening round games. Louisville was making its first postseason appear- ance since 2015 after sit- ting out last year because of a one-year, school-im- posed postseason ban for alleged recruiting viola- tions. DUKE 87, TROY 65 Gray- son Allen had 21 points off five 3-pointers, Jayson Tatum had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and second- seeded Duke continued its perfect postseason with a victory over Troy. The Blue Devils (29- 7) became the first team to win four games on the way to the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament crown last week. They kept up that pace in blow- ing past the 15th-seeded Trojans (22-15). CINCINNATI 75, KANSAS STATE 61 Troy Caupain scored 23 points, Kyle Washington added 16 and defensive-minded Cincin- nati beat Kansas State 75- 61. Cincinnati (30-5) was knocked out the first round a year ago and No. 6 seeds were 0-3 before the Bearcats took the floor, with Maryland, Creigh- ton and SMU all losing to No. 11 seeds.
