Staffreport ANDERSON TheRedBluffLady Spartans softball team kicked off the Anderson tournament Friday with wins over the West Valley Eagles 4-2 and Del Norte Warriors 2-1, to improve to 8-4 on the season. Against Del Norte Kylee Kitchell and McKenzie Colgate each had a pair of hits and Al- lyson Drury had a double. Freshman Sarah Reineman gave up 1 on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 for the com- plete game win. The tournament is scheduled to continue Saturday. LadyCardinals6,Orland5 CORNING The Corning Lady Cardinals beat the Orland Tro- jans 6-5 Tuesday afternoon at home. No individual stat were posted for the game. The Cardinals go to 5-2 on the year, 1-0 in league play as they prepare to visit the Lady Spar- tans in Red Bluff (8-4) for a 4 p.m. game Tuesday. Lady Bulldogs 4, Chester 9 LOS MOLINOS The Los Molinos Lady Bulldogs fell at home Tues- day to the Chester Volcanos 9-4 after trouncing the Princeton Eagles 23-6 March 10 to open the season 1-1. No individual stat were posted for the game. The Bulldogs were scheduled to host the Burney Raiders Fri- day evening. Lady Warriors 1, Maxwell 11 MAXWELL The Mercy Lady Warriors fell on the road to open their season Tuesday against the Maxwell Panthers, 11-1. No individual stat were posted for the game. The Warriors are scheduled to host the Greenville Indians at Frey Field in Red Bluff at 4 p.m. Monday. The Spartans beat the Panthers 4-3 in the early game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and then holding on for the win. Tanner Tweedt and Trenton Coates each had an RBI and Travis Fite hit a triple. Drew Stacy and Eric Spencer each had a stolen base. Evan Tanner gave up an earned run on 2 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings and Ian Skjegstad gave up 2 earned on 4 hits in 2.2 in- nings. Kolby Button pitched a scoreless inning and struck out 2 and Spencer came in for an out. In game 2 the Panthers went up by 2 in the top of the first but a 3-run blast off the bat of Payton Edwards put the Spartans on top in the bottom half. The Panthers tied it in the sec- ond and then had a 4-run third. The Spartans reeled in the Pan- thers with a 4-run fifth before putting up 5 in the top of the sixth. The Spartans narrowed the lead with 3 runs in the sixth but couldn't pull of the comeback. Wes Clawson and Edwards each posted a home run and 3 RBI and Evan Tanner went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Colton Youngblood had a steal. Coates started the game on the mound and went 2.2 innings and gave up 5 runs, 2 earned on 3 hits and 4 walks, with 2 strike- outs. Spencer gave up 5 runs, none earned, in 2.2, with 2 strikeouts. Sixty athletes from throughout far Northern California, including two girls and four boys from Te- hama County schools, will partic- ipate under the guidance of four volunteer coaches. Lexi Pritchard and Allyson Drury will represent the Red Bluff Spartans on the girls South team. Drury led the Eastern League with an average of 2.9 steals per game. Payton Edwards of Red Bluff, Marco Tapia of Corning, Kyle Wood of Los Molinos and Mar- cus Kuchle of Mercy will play for the boys South team. Kuchle led the Five Star League in rebounds with 17.7 per game and was No. 2 in points per game with 17.7 and blocks per game with 1.7. Tapia tied for No. 2 in the Westside League in steals per game with 1.3. The girls North team includes athletes from Modoc, Big Val- ley, Central Valley, Trinity, Etna, Shasta, Yreka, Foothill, Mt. Elijah Stewart hit a late 3-pointer for No. 11 seed USC as the Trojans upset sixth-seeded SMU 66-65 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. USC trailed SMU by 10 in the second half. The Trojans trailed Providence by 17 in the second half of their First Four game on Wednesday night before winning 75-71. Apparently, they don't know how to quit. "We just had to keep fighting back," Stewart said. "We've been in those posi- tions before. So we're kind of seasoned to it. And you just can't stop. You just got to keep going."
