ethicandherubsoffonthe other guys." For him, Rosales had something of a breakout year with the Padres. Even though he batted a mere .229, he hit a career-high 13 home runs and played more positions than ever, adding right field to a list that now excludes just cen- ter field and catcher. Yes, he pitched in two games for Texas in 2015, and actually struck out his ex-A's team- mate, Chris Young. What about that new- found power? "I just shortened up my swing a little bit and maybe got better pitches to hit, knowing my zone, showing more discipline and sticking to it," he said. Rosales flashed that power Thursday, hitting his first spring home run in the A's 6-5 loss to Cleve- land. And yes, he still sprints as fast as he can around the bases. It's his small claim to fame. For the last few years, Stat- cast has actually clocked the times of all major leaguers around the bases on over-the-fence home runs. Last year, Rosales had 13 of the fastest 14 times in baseball, and set a new record time of 15.96 seconds following a home run off the Giants' Madi- son Bumgarner last Sep- tember. Useless info, but kind of cool. Rosales said he's been running hard on home runs ever since he was in Little League, and he's simply glad he still gets a chance to hit them. "I just always want to stay true to my 12-year-old self," he said. A's FROMPAGE1 downs last season, dou- bling his total from the year before despite more than 70 fewer carries. Even with the lesser role, he also picked up more first downs in 2016 than his Pro Bowl year of 2015 as he better learned to use his big body in short-yardage situations. He'll be missed in the locker room, where he was a favorite of many — es- pecially Carr — and never griped about the reduction in his role following his 1,000-yard season in 2015. That season saw Murray start all 16 games and ac- count for 72 percent of the team's rushing total as the team finished 28th in the league on the ground. The Raiders drafted De- Andre Washington in the fifth round to help Mur- ray out, then lucked into a gem when bringing in Jalen Richard for a try- out. The two rookies com- bined for 170 rushing at- tempts and 958 yards. Murray had 195 for 788. The three-headed attack helped Oakland deliver the league's No. 6 ranked running game. Both Washington and Richard struggled dur- ing the two games Mur- ray missed with turf toe and the feeling remains that they're both comple- mentary backs in need of being paired with a power runner. Of course, Adrian Pe- terson — the future Hall of Famer who Murray will replace in Minnesota — re- mains out there and avail- able. Spencer Weisz led the Ti- gers with 15 points. The Ivy League champion Tigers (23-7) had a 19-game win- ning streak going into the NCAA Tournament. GONZAGA 66, SOUTH DA- KOTA STATE 46 Jordan Mathews scored 16 points to help Gonzaga slowly pull away from South Da- kota State for a victory and avoid the first 1 vs. 16 upset in the history of the NCAA Tournament. It looked possible for a while. The Jackrabbits (18-17), champions of the Summit League, led for the first 17 minutes of Thursday's game in the West region and stayed in range for most of the game. WEST VIRGINIA 86, BUCK- NELL 80 Nathan Adrian had 12 points and 10 re- bounds, leading West Vir- giniatoawinoverBucknell. Tarik Phillip scored 16 points for the West Re- gion's fourth-seeded Moun- taineers, who struggled at times with the outside- shooting Bison. West Vir- ginia (27-9) avoided a re- peat of last year's first- round meltdown when the third-seeded Mountaineers lost to Stephen F. Austin. MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE 81, MINNESOTA 72 Reggie Upshaw scored 19 points, Giddy Potts added 15 and Middle Tennessee State took down another Big Ten team in the NCAA Tourna- ment, beating Minnesota. Twelfth-seeded Middle Tennessee proved it was no one-year wonder after upsetting Michigan State as a No. 15 seed last March. VIRGINIA 76, UNC WILMING- TON 71 London Perran- tes scored 24 points, Mar- ial Shayok added a career- high 23 off the bench and No. 5 seed Virginia ral- lied from 15 points down to beat 13th-seeded UNC Wilmington. Perrantes scored 19 points in the second half as the Cavaliers (23-10) got their slow-paced offense go- ing. His biggest bucket was a driving bank shot with 1:37 remaining, which put the Cavs up 71-66.
