ByJohnMarshall TheAssociatedPress Thisyear'sNCAATournament has a chance to be just as good as 2016, when Kris Jenkins capped March Madness the most dra- matic way possible with a buzzer- beating 3-pointer to win Villa- nova a title. North Carolina fans may not have liked it, but it was the per- fect end to a wild tournament filled with upsets and great games. Plus, the Tar Heels are a No. 1 seed again opposite Villa- nova on the other side of the 68- team field, setting up the chance for a championship game re- match on April 3. And so the madness of March revs up all over again — a tour- nament loaded with great teams, players and marquee matchups. A few things to look for: Topteams • Villanova. The defending national champions are the top overall seed and on a roll. No need to start anywhere else. • Kansas. The Jayhawks may have had an early exit in the Big 12 Tournament, but they have one of the most talented rosters anywhere. • North Carolina. So good, even a loss to rival Duke in the ACC Tournament wasn't enough to knock them down from a No. 1 seed. • Gonzaga. Call them over- rated all you want, these Zags are deep, athletic and probably the best team coach Mark Few has NCAA MEN'S TOURNAMENT LOOKING AHEAD AT THE BEST TO COME Fromtopseedstopossibleunexpectedstory lines, March Madness is finally upon us NAMY.HUH—THEASSOCIATEDPRESSFILE Purdue forward Caleb Swanigan (50) celebrates with forward Vincent Edwards (12) a er scoring a basket during the second half of their game against Northwestern on Sunday in Evanston, Ill. By Beth Harris The Associated Press INDIAN WELLS Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-3 at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday in a fourth-round match that saw the longtime ri- vals meeting much earlier in a tournament than usual. Federer broke Nadal four times in advancing to the quar- terfinals in just over an hour. Al- though Nadal owns a 23-13 lead in their series, Federer has won the past three in a row, includ- ing an epic comeback in the Aus- tralian Open final two months ago. Federer faced just one break point on his serve in the match, but he recovered with a big serve and two winning backhands to go up 2-0 in the first set. Nadal wasn't too shabby ei- ther, serving three love games. But Federer's shotmaking was superb, frequently kissing the lines off both sides. The four-time Indian Wells winner was crafty, too. Leading 5-1, Federer moved in quickly on Nadal's second serve, surprising the Spaniard, whose forehand sailed long. Federer's drop shots were well-timed and even when a scrambling Nadal got to them in time, Federer answered with one of his 26 winners. The two stars hadn't played each other before the quarterfi- nals of an event since 2004 when they met in the third round at Miami. Wednesday's match was just the fifth time they weren't opposing each other in a final. Another one of tennis' Big Four went down, too. Novak Djokovic's 19-match winning streak at the desert tournament ended in a 6-4, 7-6 (3) loss to Nick Kyrgios. Djokovic joined top-ranked Andy Murray, who was beaten in the second round. It was Kyrgios' second win over the world's second-ranked player in two weeks, having beaten Djokovic in straight sets at Acapulco on March 2. Djokovic was bidding for a fourth consecutive title at In- dian Wells, having won a total of five in his career. The deal, announced initially by the Ravens and then by the 49ers, sendsZuttahtothe49erswhilethe teams exchange sixth-round draft picks. A Pro Bowl selection as a re- placement last season, Zuttah (6- foot-4, 300 pounds) must first pass a physical to complete the deal. A nine-year veteran, Zuttah has played in 131 NFL games with 117 starts, playing for Tampa Bay from 2008 through 2013 before joining the Ravens in 2014. He came to Baltimore in exchange for a fifth- round pick in the 2015 draft. The only other center cur- rently on the 49ers roster is Dan- iel Kilgore, who started 13 games last season before going on injured reserve with a leg injury. "Kyle and I are firm believers that competition brings out the best in everyone," said 49ers gen- eral manager John Lynch said in a statement. "We also believe that you can never have enough good offensive linemen, and Jeremy has certainly proven to be a very tal- ented player having earned a Pro Bowl selection last season." The deal came relatively cheap forthe49ersforapotentialstarter, as they moved from the 186th pick in the draft to 198. Earlier Wednesday, NFL Media reported the Ravens were on the verge of releasing Zuttah to save $2.4 million against the salary cap. Zuttah is scheduled to make $3.5 million in salary in 2017 and the 49ers have no salary cap con- cerns. Zuttah becomes the lat- est starter of significant role player added by coach Kyle Sha- nahan Lynch since the start of free agency, joining quarterback Brian Hoyer, fullback Kyle Juszc- zyk, wide receivers Pierre Gar- con, Marquise Goodwin and Al- drick Robinson, tight end Logan Paulsen, kickerRobbieGould,line- backer Malcolm Smith and defen- sive tackle Earl Mitchell. Raiders HOLMES OFF TO BUFFALO? Wide receiver Andre Holmes became the latest Raiders unrestricted free agent to leave the nest, agree- ing to a three-year contract with the Buffalo Bills worth a reported $4.5 million. Holmes, 28, played four seasons with the Raiders and in 2013 had a career-best 47 receptions for 693 yards and four touchdowns. The deal was reported by ESPN's Dan Graziano, who said it included a guarantee of $2.425 million.
