2 The Katydid A Life Dedicated to the People Birmingham Judge, Sherri Coleman Friday '82, Shares the Impact of Kappa Delta W hen Sherri Coleman Friday '82 started her journey at the University of Alabama, she knew she wanted to find a place she could call home while in college. The Kappa Delta house became not only the location she called home, but also the place where she found her best friends that remain with her today. Sherri knew that helping people was always something that would be a part of her life. She started on her path to become a judge right from the get-go at Alabama by choosing the traditional pre-law path, majoring in history with a minor in political science. After continuing on to law school at Samford University, she entered private practice with her father in Jefferson County. Working with her father gave Sherri experience with many cases involving adoptions, guardianships, and conservatorships. After working in private practice for 18 years, Sherri was ready for a change in her career path. In 2006, Sherri began a 20-month campaign to run for a position on the Jefferson County Probate Court in Birmingham. "Being a Kappa Delta was a huge help in my campaign. I had sisters who helped me do so many things from handing out cards to having magnets on their cars for 12 months," Sherri said. "But the biggest asset Kappa Delta gave me was the ability to talk to people I didn't know about something I was passionate about." A lot of the experiences in running for Probate Court reminded Sherri of her time during recruitment each summer as an undergraduate. In the same way that she had to tell women why she loved KD in a few moments, Sherri had to show people she didn't know her passion for Probate Court in the few minutes she had with them. "I drew upon those experiences of making people feel welcome, and I found it much like a session of recruitment," Sherri stated. As a Probate Court judge, Sherri has the opportunity to help those who come into the court needing hope. "In Probate Court, people are usually in a bad place, a loved one has died, or are suffering with mental or physical illness," Sherri said. "I enjoy trying to be comforting and compassionate so that when they leave, they have some hope." In her free time, Sherri enjoys reading, cycling, going to concerts, and cooking on the weekends. Her husband, Alan, is from Florence, Ala., and the couple has three daughters: Grace (23) lives in Madrid, Spain; Sara (21) is a junior at Ole Miss; and Clare (18) is a senior in high school. Kappa Delta preparing for another SucceSSful fall recruitment Bid Day Modifications Continue to Be Implemented at UA K appa Delta's recruitment team has been working hard this spring to ensure a successful fall recruitment. We love the excitement of being able to show all the potential new members a small slice of our beautiful Kappa Delta sisterhood. The University of Alabama Panhellenic Association has released the official dates for recruitment, which will begin with Convocation on August 11 and will end with Bid Day on August 19. In 2016, KD initiated 156 new members, and we are expecting to have another huge new member class in 2017. KD appreciates the many potential new member recommendations we receive from our alumnae and remains committed to giving every referred potential new member and every legacy the utmost consideration. Please note that recommendation forms may be found online at kappadelta.org or in the spring edition of The Angelos. For your convenience, recommendations can also be filled out electronically through the same KD website. Legacy Introduction Forms should be filled out and sent to the Chapter for all potential new members with Kappa Delta sisters, mothers, and grandmothers. Our mailing address is: P.O. Box 2854, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403. Due to the high volume of recommendations, our deadline for written or digital recommendations is July 15, 2017. Highly successful Bid Day modifications were implemented last year to accommodate the large number of potential new members (in excess of 2,400) and the large number of active members in each Panhellenic group. The University of Alabama Dean of Students Office, UA campus police, UA Fire Department, and all sorority house corporations coordinated a major plan to ensure the safety of our active sorority members, their new members, and the new members' parents. Emphasis is now being placed on making Bid Day a family-orientated celebration for new members and their parents. ALL of our active members and new members loved the new concept and it has been met with great accolades within the Greek community. The House Corporation will continue working with the University of Alabama to build on the success of Bid Day 2016. Please note the following Bid Day changes, which have been adopted by all UA Panhellenic groups: • Increased hired security and at least one UA police officer in every sorority house on Bid Day. • No men other than fathers or grandfathers of new members are allowed in sorority houses on Bid Day. • No alcohol is allowed inside or on lawn of sorority houses at any time. • No containers or coolers are allowed to be brought inside house during Bid Day. • Alumnae are welcome, but due to size of the crowd and fire code restrictions, please refrain from bringing non-alumnae friends and visitors. We sincerely appreciate all Kappa Delta alumnae and thank you for your continued support of our Chapter. Please feel free to contact us with any questions pertaining to University of Alabama recruitment.
