Bill@upandcomingweekly.com. PUBLISHER'S PEN When the Wizard of Oz opens next week at the Crown Coliseum, Dorothy will be welcomed to the Land of Oz by our own Fayetteville Munchkins. Now, how cool is that? And, what a wonderful "once in a lifetime" opportunity for 12 local young dancers, singers and actors. In a telephone conversation last week, Karen Long, Crown Coliseum president/ CEO, shared with me the concept behind initiating this kind of "local community involvement" — I thought it was a marvelous idea. The World of Dance, under the direction of owner Courtney Bill, will provide the talented and aspiring dancers, singers and actors for the performances scheduled for March 23 and 24. They will be trained, costumed and literally transformed into the legendary little people of this classic story that made Judy Garland (Dorothy) an overnight star. What I really, really like about it is the national touring company and the Crown Coliseum's desire to involve the Cumberland County community in the Crown's featured event. After all, the Crown Coliseum is the largest and most visible entertainment venue in the region. And, unlike other county departments and agencies like the library, health department and extension service, the Crown does not have many opportunities for this kind of interaction with local residents. This is why this event and opportunity is so important to our community. The more our residents are involved and interact with local government agencies the more they understand, appreciate and trust them. It aids in a better understanding of the services our county is providing and how they affect and impact our quality of life. This is a good thing! So, as we celebrate Sunshine Week in North Carolina we should be aware that this should not just be about open "access to public records and information." It should be about open "access to understanding." Informed and involved citizens make a community what it is. I applaud the efforts of Ms. Long and her marketing staff — Marketing Director Frank Zaccaro and his assistant, Natalie Lewis, for being sensitive to this issue and for making this an unforgettable experience for Cumberland County children. Other agencies (like the Cumberland County Animal Shelter) would also benefi t from this all encompassing position on involvement. So, "break a leg, kids" and remember: "There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like Fayetteville and Cumberland County. P.S.: Congratulations to the actual Munchkins: Maddie Green, Jacquelyn McGaha, Meghan Flynn, Haley Raper, Elise Mahon, Logan Hallas, Savannah Hicks, Lauren Geske, Tatgiuana Parker, Ella Lewis, Johslynn Ebidag and Nia Manning. 24 24 7 / Forecast available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
