VSONEWS LosMolinos satellite office coming soon The California Depart- ment of Pesticide Regula- tion and Tehama County Department of Agricul- ture are urging the public to avoid and report an ille- galandpotentiallyharmful pesticide product recently sold at homes, via the In- ternet and elsewhere. The unregistered prod- uct goes by the name "El Mejor Remedio" ("The Best Remedy") or "El Me- jor Polvo" ("The Best Dust") and claims to kill cockroaches. However, the product can make you sick. The product contains a pesticide ingredient called acephate that, when used incorrectly, can cause nausea, dizziness, confu- sion, breathing difficulties and, at high levels, convul- sions and coma. Acephate is a pesticide that is not al- lowed to be used indoors. In California, it's illegal torepackage,sellordistrib- ute a pesticide without a li- cense and without first reg- istering the product with DPR. Registered products are tested for safety and come with approved labels and safety restrictions on use. A legal pesticide prod- uct will have an EPA Reg- istration Number on the package. The unregistered cock- roach product was being sold on the Internet and door-to-door, and was ad- vertised in at least one Spanish-language maga- zine, according to Santa Clara County authorities. The product also turned up in flea markets. In January, the Santa ClaraCountyDistrictAttor- ney's Office charged a man in connection with sales of the product. Anyone with information that may help investigators locate possi- ble victims who purchased the powder is urged to call the Santa Clara District At- torney'sOfficeEnvironmen- tal Protection Unit at 408- 792-2794. If you are unsure whether a pesticide prod- uct is registered, call the Tehama County Depart- ment of Agriculture soon as possible at 527-4504. If you suspect that you have pesticide poisoning or you have a medical emer- gency dial 9-1-1. HEALTH RISK Warning issued about illegal cockroach powder The Red Bluff Round- Up will be jamming to the music of up-and-coming country music star Granger Smith, also known as Earl Dibbles, Jr., who will per- form on Sat., April 22 at the Pauline Davis Pavilion at the Tehama District Fair- ground in Red Bluff. Smith has amassed a fa- natical audience and had his first big hit, "Dirtroad Driveway" in 2013. The hit was followed by more top 10 songs, including his mainstream country hit "Backroad Song" in Feb- ruary of 2016. Smith's first national de- but album "Remington" hit stores last year and in- cluded another of Smith's hits, "If the Boot Fits." Smith is a great fit for the Red Bluff Round-Up crowd, said general man- ager James Miller. "He has top hits on ra- dio and CMT right now," Miller said. "With the de- mographics we see at the Round-Up, we're trying to please the younger fans who attend the rodeo." Tickets are $25-$35, doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. when Chad Bushnell opens. Creator of the country boy alter-ego Earl Dib- bles, Jr., Smith has a so- cial media following of more than 5 million, and YouTube views exceeding 50 million. "He has a good follow- ing," Miller said. "We feel that Granger is a good fit for the Red Bluff Round- Up Saturday night con- cert crowd. It's what the Round-Up is known for: a good party." The concert will be held in conjunction with the Round-Up, which is April 21-23. ROUND-UP Gr an ge r Sm it h to headline rodeo concert GrangerSmith The audition for the Missoula Children's The- atre production of Trea- sure Island will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 3 in the Vista Preparatory Academy gymnasium. There are roles for students kindergarten through high school se- niors and 50-60 local stu- dents will be cast to ap- pear in the show. There is no guarantee that every- one who auditions will be cast. Students wishing to au- dition must arrive by the scheduled starting time and stay for the entire two-hour session. Students coming from outside Red Bluff may need to leave school early in order to ar- rive in time to participate. The first rehearsal be- gins 15-30 minutes after the audition and is the only rehearsal at Vista. This is a group audi- tion — no advance prep- aration is necessary. Stu- dents should just be ready to come and have a good time. Remaining rehearsals will be 3:30-8 p.m. Tues- day through Friday at the State Theatre, 333 Oak St. in Red Bluff. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and, if se- lected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their roles. A detailed re- hearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclu- sion of the audition. Cast members scheduled for the full rehearsal will be asked to bring a sack lunch, din- ner or snack. The performances will be held at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at the State Theatre. The stu- dents in the cast will be called for dress rehearsal before the performance that day. All those cast must be available for both scheduled performances. Audition forms are available at schools and online at tehamaarts.org. The Missoula Children's Theatre is a non-profit or- ganization based in Mis- soula, Montana. The res- idency in Tehama County is made possible by the Te- hama County Arts Council with help from the Califor- nia Arts Commission and local businesses and orga- nizations. The production of Trea- sure Island is an original adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's epic novel. Young Jim Hawkins, a mis- chievous lad, lives with his mother and six sisters in a seaside village on the coast of Maine. The year is 1782 and the American War for Revolution is in its last days. Longing for adventure, Jim comes under the hyp- notic spell of the legend- ary pirate, Long John Sil- ver. While waiting tables in the family inn, Jim finds a treasure map and, with the villainous Silver as his seeming mentor, sails un- charted seas with only the ragged map and a flock of gulls as guides. Always up for adven- ture, Jim's ruffian friends say farewell to their vil- lage parents and serve as cabin boys for Silver and his band of hilarious, al- though unsavory, pirate types. Once on the island, nights are sleepless as true colors are revealed in the hero's quest for the prover- bial happy ending. At last, the treasure is found and hand in hand the cast is homeward bound.
