Ontheair We've got a team coming in that is setting records for attendance in Atlanta, and a team in Minnesota that's similar to Portland in that it is coming into Major League Soccer after many decades of support for the professional game. "I think you'll continue to see more and more sto- ries coming out of our league that are about growth, but I try to focus as much on celebrating all the great things that have gone on in so many mar- kets for the last number of years." The 12 bids, along with Atlanta United's season- ticket sales topping 30,000, are proof that soccer con- tinues to gain a foothold in the American sports land- scape. "It just speaks to the overall development and growth of our sport in our country and Canada," Gar- ber said. "I continue to be impressed by how many of our clubs prove that it is irrelevant how big your market is or where it's lo- cated. It really is about your plan, your focus, your commitment. ... If the in- gredients are right I'm con- vinced we can be success- ful in any city, any state in the United States. And that's not something we be- lieved 10 years ago." GAME OF THE WEEK MLS officially opens its sea- son on Friday night with a match between the host Portland Timbers and the expansion Minnesota United on national tele- vision. The Timbers were the MLS Cup champions in 2015 but failed to make the playoffs last season. MLS FROM PAGE 1 top-heavy Pelicans team trying to figure out the De- Marcus Cousins-Anthony Davis pairing on the fly. None of those three (or any of the other eight- seed options) are nearly as dangerous as what would likely await in a 2-7 opening round match-up. Right now, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Mem- phis Grizzlies are jostling for the sixth and seventh spots. Both are unappeal- ing for Golden State. A match-up with the Grizzlies would be a phys- ical slugfest, sure to wear down Draymond Green if he were forced to wres- tle those Memphis bears without Durant and sure to test Durant's knee if he was forced to stand sta- ble against a heavy dose of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol post-ups. How about Oklahoma City? What a mental test that would be. The Thun- der upgraded at the trade deadline, adding Taj Gib- son to pair in the front- court with Steven Adams, the two serving as sturdy, playoff-tested bodyguards for their whirling, venge- ful point guard Russell Westbrook. Toss in two or three games in that hostile, attacking OKC atmosphere and a five-game series may feel like a five-week series. The Warriors, with Du- rant at half-speed or even without him, would still be clearly favored to ad- vance in either match-up. But both would likely leave them a bit woozy for Round 2. And awaiting them then would likely be the third- seeded, frenetically-paced, run-and-gun Rockets (in- stead of what right now would be the winner of a 4-5 match up between Utah and the Clippers). That's the second unap- pealing side-effect of fall- ing to the No. 2 seed. The third, of course, would be losing home court in the West Finals. But the Warriors are still in the driver's seat for the top spot. They made a smart re-route late Tuesday night to add Matt Barnes, for wing depth, instead of Jose Calderon. They're still four games up on the Spurs. And they still have three All-Stars and two of their best bench pieces from last season's 73-win team. Instead of boredom, they now have motivation and a task, which typically cultivates strong play from this group. But the road there is tougher than it may appear.
