Cate captured the cov- eted Gold Eagle Champi- onship at the 2010 West Coast Nationals held at the Pauline Davis Pavil- ion. Steven Gannon won the highly competitive Open Class race after fin- ishing fourth behind Pete Johnston for the season points title. Ryan Foster leaped up to the sportsman class to grab a Gold Eagle award. Jeremy Doss won the intermediate main event, while Brad Dolin cap- tured the beginner box stock race. The Spartans thought they were going to be playing Corning, but instead wound up with a game against league rival Pleasant Valley and fell 3-0, striking out nine times in the process. Derek Jones went 2- for-3 at the plate and Scott Avery also had a pitch and started the game. The Vikings scored one run in the third and two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Coach Joe Gallaty said defensive miscues were to blame in the loss. Spartans golf Daniel Frantz fin- ished second overall at the Father Joe Barry Masters Tournament held at the Ancil Hoff- man golf course in Carmichael. Cardinal softball C o r n - ing picked up a 7-2 win over W i l l o w s and a 7-1 win over Durham at the Colusa softball tournament on Saturday.
