ThebookofGalatians was written to refute the error in thinking that faith in Christ is not sufficient if a per- son did not also keep the Law, es- pecially cir- cumcision. Paul ex- poses the false gospel that was being preached by the Judaizers and warns of the delusion and deception found in be- lieving such a thing. This week's article on bearing fruit will focus on the topic of "fake fruit" and how even the purest churches may have their share of apostates. The apostolic doctrine did not convert everyone that it convinced of its truth and this being the seed mentioned by Je- sus in the gospels that did not fall on the good soil. Counterfeit Christian- ity is the root of fake fruit and if that fruit had a tem- perature, it would be luke- warm. Paul in chapter 1 of Galatians is astonished at the fallout of the early church, verse 6 "I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gos- pel,". In Luke 8:11-16 Je- sus gives us this explana- tion "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way- side are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temp- tation fall away. Now the ones that fell among the thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with the cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience." This causes great pause as one considers how they ever were deemed to pos- sess a noble and good heart in the first place? Many have asked "Who then can be saved" and hopefully have been com- forted by the word of the Lord "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God." Still many will not be com- forted by this promise, some you might clearly see and others not so clearly. While we are instructed to know them by their fruits, as with anything that is counterfeit, it isn't easy. As with any wolf in sheep's clothing the fruit can be difficult to judge but nevertheless the task is for all believers to mimic the Bereans and study and know what it true and real. To keep examining yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Some are surprised by the thought that not ev- eryone who ever lived will be in heaven. Others might be surprised that only 75% or 50% of people will go to heaven. Jesus tells us to not be surprised when many en- ter the wide gate, and broad way to destruction. Many of them will pos- sibly have put on a show their whole life, bearing basket after basket of fake fruit. Only a few, the gos- pels tell us, will enter the narrow gate that leads to eternal life by the grace of God. The sovereignty of God is an amazing and undeni- able reality for those who put their faith in Him and burning calories to taste and see that He is good, is indeed bearing good fruit. GODTALK The book of Galatians Brandon Lengtat By Areej Hazboun The Associated Press UMM AL-FAHM, ISRAEL In Israel's Arab community, life is imitating art. A new award-winning film about Arab women bat- tling their conservative so- ciety has touched off a real- life battle: The municipality of a major Arab city in Israel hascalledforaboycottofthe film, and the film's director says she has received death threats for her unflinching portrayal of sex, drugs, par- ties, homosexualityandrape in her community. The film has also caught many Jewish Israeli audi- ences by surprise, exposing them to a vibrant world of fiercely independent young Arab women — what the film's director calls the "Pal- estinian underground." "In Between," which has won accolades at Spanish, Canadian and Israeli film festivals,waswrittenanddi- rected by Maysaloun Ham- oud, 35, and was inspired by her own experiences liv- inginTelAvivforthelastde- cade. "It is the time now for women to come and speak up," said Hamoud, who sports the title of her movie tattooed on her forearm in Arabic and English. "Until now, we were listening to men, and they were the ones to run everything." "In Between" is the film's English title. In Arabic, it is called"LandSea,"anexpres- sion meaning "Neither Here Nor There," the film's name in Hebrew. The film tells the story of three Arab women who leave home to work and study in the live-and-let-live Israeli city of Tel Aviv. They find themselves stuck be- tween an Arab society that often rejects nontraditional roles for women, and an Is- raeli society that while more openandWesternized, often doesn't treat Arabs as full equals. Arab-Israelis make up about 20 percent of Israel's citizenry. But they share the same ethnicity, language and culture of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and many identify as Palestinians rather than Is- raeli. As a result, many Jew- ishIsraelisseethemasasub- versive fifth column. In the film, there's Salma, a lesbian DJ and bartender who wears multiple pierc- ings and comes from a con- servative Christian family. There's her sharp-tongued roommate Laila, a lawyer who parties, drinks, chain- smokes, and dumps her boy- friend because he is embar- rassedtointroducehertohis family. And there's their shy, new roommate Nour, a religious Muslim girl from Umm al- Fahm, a conservative Mus- lim city in northern Israel, who studies computer sci- ence at Tel Aviv University. Nour's fiancé, a devout Mus- lim who is affiliated with a charity in the city, consid- ers Nour's roommates to be bad influences, and tries to pressure her to leave them and get married before she is ready. He is portrayed as violentandcorrupt,andare- ligious hypocrite. "The message that I want to reach Palestinian soci- ety is that we are very, very strong women," said Mouna Hawa, who plays the role of Laila. "We are not de- fects, our voice is not a de- fect, neither are our acts, re- sponsibilities or decisions . we don't even know we are that strong, because it's as if we always need a man to be next to us." The movie is almost en- tirely in Arabic with Hebrew subtitles, andmoreandmore cinemas in Israel are begin- ning to screen it. The direc- tor has been traveling across the country to speak to audi- ences at the screenings. After one screening in downtown Tel Aviv, a Jew- ish Israeli viewer wondered if the scenes of raucous Arab dancepartiesreallyreflected reality. When another asked the director if her movie was reaching Arab audiences, she asked if there were Ar- absintheaudience,anddoz- ensraisedtheirhands,heap- ing praise on the director. But much of the reac- tion from Arabs has been angry, with negative com- ments flooding the film's Arabic-language Facebook page."Thismovieisawhore- house, it distorted the image of Islam," one commenter wrote. Some social media comments have threatened the director's life, Hamoud said. But some other com- ments were positive too. "All the respect, a great movie" another commenter wrote. Riham Mahameed, a 22-year-old from Umm al- Fahem who studies at a university in Beersheba, had mixed feelings about the film. "Thecharactersarebrave, representing the reality we're trying to hide in all kinds of ways," she said. But shecomplainedthepartying women of the film were not representative of all Arab women who like her leave home for studies and work. "The movie showed only the bad things about girls living outside the home. Par- ents will be scared of what their daughters are doing," Mahameed said. Abd al-Monem Foad, a spokesman for the Umm al- Fahm municipality, said his city has called for a boycott of the movie because it gives the city, home to two central characters, a bad name. "It distorts the image of Umm al-Fahm," he said. "It distorts our young men and women, it distorts their rep- utation, itdepicts theminan immoral and indecent way." Foad himself did not see the film. Even some liberal Arab- Israeli commentators, like popular columnist Sayed Kashua, have argued the film reinforces negative stereotypes, particularly with the film's villain, the bearded, religious Muslim fiancé. Blogger Samah Salaime said a violent scene involv- ing the Muslim man and his fiancée Nour is "juicy mate- rial for the budding Islamo- phobe,"thoughshenotesthe film includes a positive male role model in Nour's father. She referred to the He- brew title of the movie when offering her critique of the film. "I found myself nei- ther here nor there," Salaime wrote.
