Sports 1B Friday March 12, 2010 Friday Little League Opening Ceremony at Jackson Heights, 5 p.m. Softball — Corning at Colusa Tournament Softball — Los Molinos at Foothill Small Schools Tourney Softball — Red Bluff at Pleasant Valley Tournament Tennis — Wheatland at Corning, 3 p.m. Golf — Red Bluff vs Jesuit Walks harm Lady Warriors in opener DN Staff Report A combined 28 walks led to some big innings and eventually an 11-10 Pierce win over Mercy, Wednesday, in the Warriors season opener. Pierce took seven walks to open up the second inning and a 5-0 lead, but the Warriors struck back in the top half. Coupled with some walks of their own, Benicia Grace and Desiree Crane each tripled to help Mercy put up a five-spot of their own and tie the game. Pierce struck back with six runs in the fourth inning, only to have the Warriors counter again in the sixth inning with five more runs. Diana Van Ert started the sixth inning with a double, which sparked the rally. Ariana Ramos, Grace and Crane each hit RBI singles in the inning, but it would be as close as Mercy would get. Coach Tito Cervantes said his Warriors played well in spite of their lack of experience or even practice leading up to the season opener. Crane finished her day 2-for-4 with five RBIs. Grace had a three RBIs and Ariana Ramos drove in two runs. Natasha Czajka struck out eight batters in six innings. Elsewhere: • Cameron Vietti had the lone hit for the Mercy baseball team in a 10-0 loss to Pierce. • The Los Molinos baseball team went 2-1 at their own Glenn Cox Tournament with a 10-0 win over University Prep, an 11-9 win over Weed and a 9-8 loss to Biggs. • The Corning Lady Cardinals softball team beat Orland 7-4 on Tuesday. The Lady Spartans pressed for an equalizer, but couldn't maintain much of an offensive push in the final third of the field during the second half. Red Bluff-Corning set for Saturday DN Staff Report Tehama County rivals, Red Bluff and Corning are set to face each other Satur- day at 11:30 a.m. at Mitchell Field in Oroville after both schools opened up the Oroville-Las Plumas baseball tournament with a pair of victories. Red Bluff got a pair of outstanding pitching perfor- mances from Maison Etzler and Gerald Baker, Friday, handing both Anderson and Colusa 10-0 five-inning defeats. Etzler pitched a one-hitter in a five-inning mercy shortened game against Anderson, striking out five bat- ters and not allowing a walk. He received solid defensive play from the left side of the infield from shortstop E.J. Stanton and third base- man Cody Gappa, as well as behind the plate from catcher Austin Brownfield. Offensivley, leadoff hitter Derek Jones set the table with a 2-for-3 day and scored two runs. Stanton went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Dante Garaventa batted in three and Austin Brown- field had a pair of RBIs. Red Bluff's second game on Friday was nearly iden- tical to the first as Baker pitched his own one-hitter against Colusa. He also finished with five strikeouts. Once again it was Jones setting the table, as he drew three walks and scored two runs. Stanton was plunked by a pitch twice and scored twice. Gappa went 2-for-3 with a two RBIs and Garaventa had another three RBI game. Jordan Fox went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Coach Joe Gallaty praised the defensive perfor- mances of Cliff Dais, Scott Avery and Trevor Miller and another strong game from Brownfield. Red Bluff is 5-1 on the season. (AP) — Tim Lincecum's 19-pitch first inning was an adventure. A leadoff double to Ichiro Suzuki followed by a walk. A flyout, then a strikeout on a double steal. And a two-run sin- gle by Ryan Garko. Eric Byrnes eventually grounded out. Lincecum, the two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, doesn't quite look like himself yet at spring training and struggled through 2 2-3 innings in the Giants' sloppy 6- 2 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. A's rally to beat Milwaukee PHOENIX (AP) — Randy Wolf struck out four in three scoreless innings, but Gabe Gross hit a two-run triple against his former team in the seventh and Michael Taylor added a three-run homer in the eighth to power the Oakland Athlet- ics to a 7-3 win over a Brewers split-squad on Thursday. Ryan Braun had a two-run homer for Milwaukee. Wolf agreed to a $29.75 million, three-year deal during December's winter meetings and has not allowed a run in five innings this spring.
