Giants in our back yard
f
By Mark Goldberg
The Sonoran Desert has a wide range of beauty and "surprises" for those willing
to study and explore. A small group of Quartzsite residents were treated to a
guided tour of The Blythe Giant Intaglios which lie fi fteen miles north of Blythe
on Highway 95. The Blythe Intaglios are listed on the National Register of His-
toric Places, and have been documented in Erich Von Daniken's book, "Chariots
of the Gods."
Our guide was eighty-one year old Blythe resident, historian, Chemehuevi sa-
cred sites monitor, author and activist, Alfredo Figueroa and his son, Jesse.
These designs on the surface of the desert are "geoglyphs," also known as
"intaglios." The rocks on the surface of the desert often have "desert varnish,"
which is Manganese which has leached out of the rocks over thousands of years,
leaving a dark stain on the surface of the rocks.
