StaffReport REDBLUFF The Red Bluff Spar- tans and Corning Cardinals boys and girls soccer teams took losses this week in league play. The Spartans boys fell 3-0 on the road Wednesday afternoon to the league-leading Chico Pan- thers, who scored in the first half and tacked on two more goals in the second half. The loss moves the Spartans into fourth place in the East- ern Athletic League standings at 1-2-0. They are scheduled to host the Foothill Cougars (1-9 overall, 0-3 league) at 6 p.m. Fri- day. The Spartans fall to fourth place in the league standings at 0-1-2. They are scheduled to travel to Palo Cedro on Friday for a 6 p.m. game against the Foot- hill Cougars (2-5-1 overall, 0-3 league). Paradise 3, Cardinals 0 The Corning Cardinals boys team was shut out by the Para- dise Bobcats on Tuesday in Par- adise, 3-0. The Cardinals (7-3 overall, 0-1 league) were scheduled to host the Wheatland Pirates (1-9 over- all, 0-2 league) on Thursday after- noon in a nonleague game. Paradise 3, Lady Cardinals 0 The Lady Cardinals gave up three goals in the first half and were shut out by the Paradise Bobcats 3-0 on Tuesday in Par- adise. Sophomore Brisa Martinez was named player of the game for the Cardinals with 15 steals. "Definitely one of our toughest games for sure, but we are very lucky to have had player of the game Brisa Martinez really step it up," said coach Ed Curiel. "She came in from the get-go and chal- lenged every ball no matter what the situation was. She was there to slow the play and led our team with steals in this game. Majority of the game she played the stop- per position but that didn't stop her from running the lane, sup- porting our center, sweeping up the runs and covering the defen- sive wings." Masiel Anaya had 11 steals, freshman Itzel Ramirez had eight and Julissa Marin had six. Heidi Magana had three shots on goal for the Cardinals, Ramirez had two and Megan Ross had one. At goal, sophomore Anna Reyn- olds made 10 saves. The Lady Cardinals (4-5 over- all, 1-1 league) were scheduled to host the Wheatland Pirates (3- 2-2 overall, 1-0-1 league) in a non- league game Thursday afternoon. By Elliott Almond Bay Area News Group Clark County commissioner Steve Sisolak received dozens of calls Thursday morning af- ter tweeting that the Raiders had filed for relocation to move to Las Vegas, the latest step in southern Nevada's campaign to gain an NFL team. Many of the callers wanted to know where they could buy sea- son tickets. "One guy wanted to have a pa- rade," said Sisolak. But Vegas officials aren't ready to celebrate with so many hurdles still to clear in a compli- cated move that needs a solid fi- nancial stadium plan and NFL backing before it happens. The Raiders now must seek the approval of 24 of 32 owners before proceeding. A vote could happen in late March at league meetings in Phoenix. "They're committed," Sisolak said of the Raiders. "Now it's up to the NFL." A Raiders official confirmed the filing without comment. But East Bay officials didn't let the latest development dampen their hopes of keeping the foot- ball team in Oakland. An in- vestment group including for- mer 49ers and Raiders star Ron- nie Lott has proposed to build a $1.25 billion, 55,000-seat sta- dium at the team's present site. "We are ready to compete," Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf said. "We know that Oakland of- fers something that Las Vegas will never have and that is leg- acy and loyalty." The mayor said the NFL plans to meet with Oakland officials to allow the home market to pitch a proposal from the For- tress Investment group. The city, county and Lott's group agreed to a term sheet in December. They are working on an exclu- sive negotiation agreement that needs city and county approval. After the agreement is OK'd the investors can create a more de- tailed plan. "The more we work on this project, the more convinced we are that Oakland is the right place for the Raiders," said Sam Singer, a Fortress Group spokes- man. "We are in this game and we NFL Raiders file with league for Vegas relocation By John Nicholson The Associated Press LA QUINTA Phil Mickelson hit his opening tee shot so poorly in morning rain and cold that he hit a provisional ball just to get in an- other swing. He scrambled to par the hole and went on to shoot a 4-under 68 on Thursday in the Career- Builder Challenge, leaving him four strokes back in his return from two sports hernia surgeries. "I struck it horrible, but I scored out of my mind," Mickel- son said. "So, I'm very happy with it. My first round of golf was Sat- urday and I've been able to work out just the last two weeks." Lefty hooked his first tee shot into the trees at La Quinta Coun- try Club, then reloaded and hit the provisional into the fairway. "That next hole, the second hole's an extremely difficult drive and I wanted to just get another swing," Mickelson said. He found the first ball and hammered a shot under the trees to just off the front of the green. "It was really a great day for me because I scored so much better than I played," Mickelson said. "And when I finally did hit some really good shots I ended up close and made a few birdies. And when I hit some really bad shots — and I hit some really bad shots — I was still able to salvage some up-and-downs for pars." Tour rookie Dominic Bozzelli shot a 64 on the Stadium Course at PGA West — the most difficult of the three courses — to top the leaderboard. He holed out from 115 yards for eagle on the par-4 14th. "Been working hard back home, doing all right things on and off the course, and it's nice to come out and have that hard work pay off," Bozzelli said. Jhonattan Vegas, the 2011 champion, was a stroke back at 65 along with Harold Varner III, Hudson Swafford and Patton Kizzire. Vegas and Kizzire played PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Tour- nament Course, and Varner and Swafford opened at La Quinta. Rain fell off and on in the morning and more was expected Friday, with the PGA Tour moving the tee times up an hour. "Ain't nobody never comfort- able when you're having to play golf when it's raining and a little cool like it was," Boo Weekley said after a 66 on the Stadium Course. Play started with the temper- ature in lows 50s and it barely climbed into the 60s in the af- ternoon. The forecast high Fri- day was 61. "The ball didn't go as far, but you don't have to hit it that far out here," Varner said. The 46-year-old Mickelson had surgery Oct. 19 — three days af- ter tying for eighth in the sea- son-opening Safeway Open — and again Dec. 12. "I feel fine," Mickelson said. "I've been able to work out the last two weeks. And again, you start out real slow, but you get PGA TOUR Mi ck el so n returns with 68 at La Quinta Rookie Bozzelli shoots 64 to take early lead RAIDERS PAGE 5 GOLF PAGE 5 SPORTS » redbluffdailynews.com Friday, January 20, 2017 MORE ATFACEBOOK.COM/RBDAILYNEWS AND TWITTER.COM/REDBLUFFNEWS B1
