HORTICULTURE Fruit tree pruning workshop set With black smoke curl- ing miles into the air, Las- sen Peak passed through one of the most famous eruptions Wednesday morning that has been recorded since the mem- orable blowout on May 22, 1915. The famous volcano began belching about 10 o'clock and grew in in- tensity, while a pall of smoke, carried by an up- per current of air, moved northwest passing almost above Red Bluff and set- tling in the vicinity of Henleyville. Reports from Manton and a farmer named E. D. Croaker, six miles beyond, indicate that the eruption was preceded by terrible rumblings which foretold the upheaval that was to come. Those compara- tively close to the volcano say they could see cinders falling in the snow on Bro- koff mountain, directly to the south of the volcano. — Jan. 18, 1917 100 YEARS AGO...
