By Curtis Pashelka Bay Area News Group SAN JOSE Sharks forward Joel Ward looked up and thought he had some time as he went to re- trieve the puck along the boards near the bench of the Winnipeg Jets. Instead, Ward was leveled by Jets defenseman Mark Stuart. "Turned around," Ward said, "and just saw a big white jersey in front of me." Ward, though, had pushed the puckaheadtoChris Tierney, who set up Timo Meier for a break- away. Meier made no mistake as his goal was the start of a domi- nant second period by the Sharks in their 5-2 win over the Jets. Tierney, Ward and Meier com- bined for three goals and three assists, Martin Jones made 26 saves and Brent Burns scored his team-high 18th goal of the sea- son as the Sharks moved back to within three points of Anaheim for first place in the Pacific Di- vision. Ward looked alert after the hit from Stuart but had to be taken into the Sharks' dressing room to be examined. Ward returned to the ice midway through the sec- ondperiodandfinishedthegame a plus-3. He was also 9-0 in the faceoff circle. "That's the commitment we talk about," DeBoer said of Ward's play. "Taking that hit, making that play scores the goal. We need that. Joel's a guy that brings that to the rink almost ev- ery night." "It was a hockey play. It was a good hit," Ward said. "I tried to get the puck out obviously, and next thing I knew I was on my back and heard the horn go off. I wasn't too sure what happened after that." Ward opened the scoring 11:54 into the first period with the Sharks killing a penalty to Da- vid Schlemko. Ward won a faceofftotheright of Jones and a clearing attempt by Justin Braun got past Jets de- fenseman Dustin Byfuglien at the Sharks' blue line and into the neutral zone. Ward picked it up and fired a wrist shot to the far, upper corner past a sliding Mi- chael Hutchinson for his second goal in six games and fourth of the season. "I tried to anticipate for it to go down, and (Byfuglien) kind of slowed it up a little bit," Ward said. "Just kind of saw glove side NHL Joel Ward leads Sharks in win over Winnipeg By Genaro C. Armas The Associated Press GREEN BAY, WIS. For once after a game, Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby felt sore. He got mobbed by giddy team- mates after hitting the 51-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Dallas Cowboys. At one point, Crosby had to beg hulking left tackle David Bakhtiari from trying to pick up the kicker for a victory parade. After getting eliminated from the playoffs on the last play in each of the previous three sea- sons, the Packers experienced last-second elation in the 34-31 win over Dallas on Sunday. Green Bay will face the Atlanta Falcons on the road in the NFC championship game on Sunday. "Usually after a game, I don't feel beat up," a smiling Crosby said on Monday. "We play a kid's game, and those moments like that, just kind of bring that (joy) out of us." Crosby's clutch kick was set up by Aaron Rodgers' throw , while rolling to his left, to toe-dragging tight end Jared Cook along the sideline for a 36-yard gain. Coach Mike McCarthy on Monday cred- ited Rodgers with making all the right calls on that play. "It's one of the greatest plays that you'll ever see in that ... we call it the final eight (plays) situation for us. But yes, the orchestration and the protection call, the route concept, great, great job with it," McCarthy said.
