Basketball FROM PAGE 1 would have to wait for Mc- Daniels and Shanahan un- til their respective teams are finished in the playoffs; both the Patriots and Fal- cons host divisional-round games Saturday. McDaniels left the Pa- triots after the 2008 sea- son (no playoffs) to replace MikeShanahanastheBron- cos coach, a role McDaniels was dismissed from after a 3-9 start in 2010. McDermott was the 49ers' most recent can- didate to interview, and a day after that visit, the Carolina Panthers defen- sive coordinator headed to the Bills. The Broncos announced Joseph as their coach just before noon PT, doing so before his scheduled inter- views later Wednesday with the San Diego Chargers and Thursday with the 49ers. Another potential 49ers candidate is Seattle Se- ahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable, who pre- viously served as the Raid- ers coach. He is scheduled to interview Sunday, ESPN reported. As for the 49ers' general manager search, another candidate has emerged. Terry McDonough, the Ar- izona Cardinals vice pres- ident of player personnel, will be interviewed Fri- day, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported. The 49ers are also expected to interview Seattle Seahawks co-di- rectors of player personnel Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer. Previous GM interviews have been held with Green Bay's Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst, Minnesota's George Paton, Carolina's Brandon Beane, Indianap- olis' Jimmy Raye III and ESPN analayst Louis Rid- dick, the latter of whom in- terviewed Tuesday. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 fice. So life could be worse." Although the U.S. play- ers on Europeanclubteams can't attend this camp, Arena held his first prac- tice with 28 players, includ- ing several MLS stalwarts who couldn't crack the Eu- rocentric Klinsmann's tal- ent pool. Sporting Kansas City's Benny Feilhaber, FC Dal- las' Matt Hedges, the Gal- axy's Sebastian Lletget and the Red Bulls' Dax McCarty will get a look from Are- na's fresh eyes during the monthlong camp. Arena also has changed Klins- mann's strict rules for diet and fitness, hoping to re- store a team spirit that ap- peared to fade late in the German's tenure. "You can expect honesty from Bruce," said the LA Galaxy's Gyasi Zardes, who broke through on the U.S. team under Klinsmann. "He's easing us into camp, but he's already made a ter- rific speech about knowing each and every player, so you don't have to impress him. I love playing under him." Arena has personal his- tory with several camp in- vitees. Along with Galaxy stars Zardes and Lletget, Arena previously coached DaMarcus Beasley, Nick Rimando, Chad Marshall, Jozy Altidore and captain Michael Bradley, who had a thick, lustrous head of hair when he got his U.S. break in 2006. "I'm very excited to be back playing for Bruce," Bradley said. "He was the one who gave me my first opportunity with the na- tional team, and that's something you never for- get. ... He's going to cre- ate an environment where guys are going to compete, guys are going to enjoy themselves, and there's go- ing to be a real team and a real spirit and a real feel- ing that we're all in some- thing together. But when it's time to work and time to compete, we're going to do that, and I think he's going to be very clear and tell it exactly like it is, which is very important, which is exactly what we need." Bradley's father, Bob, replaced Arena as the U.S. coach after the 2006 World Cup. Bob Bradley was Are- na's assistant at the Univer- sity of Virginia and with D.C. United. "I knew Michael Bradley as a little baby, which is in- teresting," Arena said with a bemused smile. Arena is counting on Mi- chael Bradley and fellow veteran Jermaine Jones to be leaders for the U.S. over the next few months.
