Joseph and McDermott were the only defensive coordinators interviewed by the 49ers a week into a search that's otherwise in- cluded offensive-oriented assis- tants: Anthony Lynn (Bills), Josh McDaniels (New England Patri- ots), Sean McVay (Washington) and Kyle Shanahan (Atlanta Fal- cons). Jed York, the 49ers CEO who is leading their searches for a coach and general manager, took a break Wednesday to attend the NFL owners' meetings in New York. Meanwhile, McVay, the 30-year- old grandson of former 49ers ex- ecutive John McVay, commanded a second interview Wednesday from the Los Angeles Rams, two days after his sitdown with the 49ers brass. It's been a week since the 49ers interviewed their first potential coach in Lynn, who this past sea- son got promoted from the Bills running backs coach to offensive coordinator to, for the season fi- nale, interim coach. By Greg Beacham The Associated Press CARSON Bruce Arena realizes he has very little time to get back into his groove with the U.S. na- tional team. After all, two vital World Cup qualifiers are loom- ing just two months away. Luckily for Arena, he has done this job before. He's also returning to work in extremely familiar surroundings. "I think it's a great opportu- nity for me personally, but it's an important time for this team," Arena said Wednesday. "Our goal is pretty clear: We need to qualify for Russia in 2018." Arena convened the first training camp of his second stint in charge of the U.S. team under sunny skies at its train- ing base south of downtown Los Angeles. The complex also is the home of the LA Galaxy, where Arena served as the coach and general manager of the MLS club for the past 8 seasons. Arena took over for Jurgen Klinsmann in late November, accepting the task of salvag- ing the Americans' World Cup qualification hopes. Two losses last year dropped the U.S. into last place in its qualifying hex- agonal, albeit with eight games to go. The transition isn't easy, and the stakes are high. But Arena seems to be better equipped for the task than just about any- body. "I'm having the time of my life," Arena said with his usual sardonic tone. "I haven't had to move. The hotel is about a five- minute drive from my house. I've been coming here for the last eight years. Carl Ed- wards listed reason after rea- son for stepping away from full- time NASCAR competition this season, less than two months re- moved from nearly winning his first Cup title. He's content with his career accomplishments. He wants to spend more time on his out- side interests. He's healthy and doesn't want that to change. Edwards, one of NASCAR's top stars and driver for a top organiza- tion, really seemed at peace with a personal decision he made right before Christmas. But for a brief moment, he had to turn his back to the audience and compose himself. "Yeah, I just want to be a good person, you know?" he said, his bottom lip quivering. Edwards quickly recovered and returned to script. He has so many outside interests — avi- ation, agriculture, a possible ca- reer in politics — that he literally has no idea what will come next. "There's no life raft I am jump- ing on to, I'm just jumping," he said. "This is a pure, simple, per- sonal decision." Edwards had one year remain- ing on his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing, and he came 10 laps away from winning his first Cup title two months ago. He informed Joe Gibbs in late December he did not want to race this season, and used about 40 minutes Wednesday at team headquarters to explain his reasoning. "Thiswassuchasurprise,"Gibbs said."Whenhesatdowninfrontof me and shared what he was think- ing, I was totally surprised. I said, 'This is a huge decision, let's take some time with this."' Four days later, Edwards and Gibbs spoke on the telephone and the team owner knew the decision was made. "I could tell he was totally com- mitted," Gibbs said. Roughly 10 minutes after Ed- wards finished, Gibbs began a second news conference in which Mexican Daniel Suarez was intro- duced as the replacement for Ed- wards' No. 19 Toyota. Suarez is the reigning Xfinity Series champion and the first foreign-born winner of a national series crown. "Since I moved to NASCAR when I was 16 years old, this has been something that I've been dreaming about," Suarez said. "To be in this position is just some- thing amazing." Suarez took an unusual path to NASCAR in that he moved to North Carolina alone intent on pursuing a career in racing that is rare in his country. He knew al- most no English, taught himself by watching TV and has rapidly risen through the national ranks. He will now be the fourth driver for the most dominant team in NASCAR.
